Friday Funnies

Hi,

The sky was cloudy for parts of the day.  It lived up to the forecast and gave us temps in the mid-90’s.  Another beautiful day.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “We’re In This Love Forever” by Al Jarreau. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otVH5cv9z1A  Now it time for ‘Old School Friday’, and a little something you might remember:
“(Shoo-bop, shoo-bop), my baby) (Shoo-bop, shoo-bop)  __ __ it seems so good to see you back again, how long has it been?  (Ooo, seems like a mighty long time, shoo-bop, shoo-bop my baby)…”  Hint:  This sultry ballad came out in 1963 by a woman with several other hits.  It’s a common greeting that had deeper meaning as the song goes on.

This morning we did things a little differently.  We thought the power would go off at 8:30am, but it stayed until a little after 9am.  That gave us more time to get ready for our two restaurant morning.  After JaiDee’s walk we went to The Wanderer for coffee, roti and ice with our friend John.  At one point, I took JaiDee for his second walk down to the river.  We saw the geese, and then walked along the bank for a bit.  I had never done that before. He found lots of places to stick his nose, but I pulled him away from some suspicious holes.  He’s good for about an hour and a half, then he gets restless.  We know the signs, so at 11am we said our goodbyes and stopped by the house so JaiDee could use the facilities (555).  When I walked in the house, the air was going and the pool filter was bubbling.  The power was back.  We decided to keep to our plan and go to Chivit Thamma Da for lunch.

When we arrived at Chivit it was very crowded.  There were tables available, but the place was buzzing.  JaiDee was suddenly in character, posing for photos, nodding to fans and generally creating an aura around himself.  He had one couple getting on the ground to pose with him.  Another session saw him changing his pose in order to look into the camera.  What a ham.  About the time we finished our salads, he was ready to go.  On the way out, he was still attracting admirers.  It’s a good thing the staff loves him too.

Back at The Big Brown House, we all crashed.  Then the air/con repair crew arrived at 2:30pm, two hours early, and that changed the whole afternoon.  None of us was ready to get up and leap into action, but that’s what had to happen.  One machine is doing fine, no leaking, but the main one in our room is showing signs of decline.  After 12 years of constant use, well, it can be forgiven (555).

Today’s photo is another of Nitchanan and JaiDee hanging out.  He almost looks a little bored with the photo-shoot process, but ‘the show must go on’.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.     Time for the ‘Funnies’.   Oh, it’s another Formula 1 weekend, this time from England.

                           Peace,
                                     Danny

Individual

Hi,

The weather today was a cloudy 91°F with a 15 minute shower in the early afternoon.  Tomorrow’s forecast is for 93° and more ‘rain’.  Oh boy.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ song got a little action.  This tune is from the early 80’s and was on the radio a lot.  It's got to be in a few more memory banks.  “It’s like a rainy night and candlelight.  And ooh, it’s so romantic.  We got the whole thing working out so right, and it’s just the way we planned it.  __ __ __ __ __, we got the kind that lasts forever….”  Clue: This singer has taken us from morning to moonlight.

This morning we took JaiDee to his first location for morning walks.  The one with all the trees and ‘stuff’ on the ground, the place with the good smells.  It wasn’t so much for the smells, for us it was the shade and the cooler temperature in the air and on the pavement.  It was great walk and then we went to Singhakla Coffee and Art Gallery.  We had some errands to run and he doesn’t have a following at this quiet little place.  He was a little surprised that it was such a short morning.

Today’s photo was taken on our morning walk.  The big building under construction will be the home of the Provincial
Department of Agriculture.  Chiang Rai’s primary ‘industry’ is agriculture.

The main errand was to Teppawan Stationary and Art Supply for canvases.  We also wanted to see our dear friend Supalak.  It was a brief but meaningful visit.  We hadn’t seen the family since the lockdown first happened.

Life at The Big Brown House is evolving.  Both dogs are now taken out to the front lawn for exercise together.  JaiDee approaches TongDee with a playful stance, she snarls and chases him and they run around a bit.  He is faster, so she gives up and lies down.  He keeps repeating this pattern and they both end up getting a good run.

Tomorrow the power in our area will be off from 8:30am to 1:30pm.  This means that we will be spending that time away from the house, in cooler surroundings.  Our plan is to go to The Wanderer when they open at 9am and spend the morning in the cool of the woods.  Then drive the brief, five minute drive to Chivit Tamma Da for lunch with a breeze off the river.  If there’s no breeze, they do have a room with air/con.  It should work out to be a wonderful adventure for the three of us, yes, JaiDee will be getting the long morning.  TongDee doesn’t seem to mind the heat.  Today, Lisa spotted her lounging on the hot driveway in direct sun.  No doubt tanning her fur.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                   Peace,
                             Danny

Books

Hi,

The weather today was a little cooler, but still hot.  The humidity pushed it to the uncomfortable level.  Oh well, tomorrow is supposed to be back in the 90’s again.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song was “Love The One You’re With” by Stephen Stills.  ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ is next.
“It’s like a diamond ring, it’s a precious thing, and we never want to lose it.  It’s like a favorite song that we love to sing, ev’ry time we hear the music.  And __ __ __ __ __, we got the kind that lasts forever.  __ __ __ __ __, and like berries on the vine, it gets sweeter all the time.”  Hint:  This smooth singer played his voice like an instrument.  The love song is one of commitment and joy.

Our day was one of movement.  It began with a short morning walk with  JaiDee and another bummer for him because we had to leave him after the walk.  Lisa had an appointment and we had just enough time to get gas and coffee.  I hope JaiDee is not keeping track because this is the second day in a row that he didn’t get to go with us.
The gas/coffee experience is one we’ve had before, but mainly when traveling.  There is a gasoline company that has a standing deal at all of their locations.  You get gas, there’s a 7-11, and an Amazon Coffee all at one stop.  The only thing about the coffee is that you may not get a consistently flavorful cup.  Our iced coffee today was lacking in smoothness.  Still, the stop saved a bunch of time.

Today’s photo was taken at Amazon Coffee.  Many locations have some sort of relaxing scene.  This is one of the best I’ve seen.  To the right of the scene is a quiet waterfall.

After the appointment we met our friends Caty and Lisa for lunch at Sabroso for Mexican food.  It was our first visit back since they reopened.  We had ordered ‘take-out’ but hadn’t actually sat down to eat.  We had a ball.  For the first part of the meal, there was lots of ‘dog talk’.  Lisa apologized to Caty for our dominating the conversation with talk of our ‘children’ and Caty, mother of twins, admitted that she does it all the time.  There was food talk, discussion of health remedies, and no meal is complete without some mention of the virus.  It left us all very full, physically and mentally.

Forty-five minutes later, we were back on the highway headed north to Mae Chan.  That’s where Dr. Mark aka Dr. Happy had his office.  It was time for me to get some injections in my lower back.  An improvement on the quality of life.  On the way home we stopped at Browney Pet World for more of the frozen meals that TongDee will eat.  Lisa figured out that she doesn’t like fish.  Now she’s getting meals fit for humans and since they are on sale, she will dine well until we figure her out.  This morning Natcha took both dogs out and when JaiDee approached TongDee, she did her growling, snapping routine but this time, he nipped her (so far, no blood has been drawn). Natcha said TongDee cried and ran off.  Hmm, maybe he IS the boss of the yard.  More will be revealed.

Feels like a Wacky Wednesday.

                             Peace,

Skunk

Hi,

Chiang Rai had some great ‘after the rain’ weather today.  It didn’t get too hot, just hot enough, and it was dry all day.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song has many friends.  Here’s a little more from an artist who became part of a very successful trio and then quartet.  “Don’t be angry, don’t be sad, don’t sit cryin’ over good times you had.  There’s a girl right next to you and she’s just waiting for something to do.  Well there’ a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.  And if you can’t be with the one you love, __ __ __ __ __.”  Clue:  I suppose it could be titled:  ‘Take advantage of the current situation’.  Still poses an ethical dilemma.  Hmm.

This turned out to be a Big C day.  JaiDee was not pleased with this arrangement.  He knows the schedule and when he realized he wasn’t going with us this morning, there was a bit of bad behavior.  He got over it and Natcha took him and TongDee out and ran them around the yard.

I forgot to tell you about our walk last night.  It was raining.  It was very light, but it was water falling from the sky just the same.  We took small umbrellas and stayed dry.  There were only two other people walking, a couple of tattooed young guys with their shirts off, enjoying the weather, talking and laughing.  The whole scene was interesting, seeing this big piece of land that is usually bustling with activity, empty.  Tonight was the total opposite, busy all the way around.

After our Big C shopping it was necessary to go to Top’s Market, which just happens to be in the Central Plaza Mall. Any other day and this would have been a routine stop.  Today was the celebration of The King’s birthday and the joint was jumping.  We went to Starbuck’s first, just to keep our usual morning ‘thing’ going.  Then we did our shopping.  Walking through the mall on days like this are always fun for me because I like to see the cross-section of life that seems to show up on holidays.  Masks were in place and that alone was something to check out.  There are so many variations on the theme.

While we were out shopping, Natcha took some adorable photos of Nitchanan and JaiDee.  They have become very close lately and it’s really nice to see.  I’ll post more later.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

                         Peace,

Talent

Hi,

The weather looked like rain all weekend, but didn’t happen until today.  It started with showers in the afternoon and it’s still happening.

The ‘Old School Friday’ song was “Tears On My Pillow” by Little Anthony & The Imperials.  Now, for ‘Easy Monday’, see if this rings a bell:  “If you’re down and confused, and you can’t remember who you’re talkin’ to.  Concentration slips away, because your baby is so far away.  Well there’s a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove, and if you can’t be with the one you love, honey, __ __ __ __ __.”  Hint:  Not necessarily the best advice, but you know what he means.

JaiDee now has a standing ‘Play-date’ on Saturday mornings with his good friends Towan and Katai at Work@Home.  Towan is the only person JaiDee is technically allowed to jump on.  They have a connection that is a joy to watch.  When Towan came out of his house and JaiDee spotted him, he raced as fast as he could and then they appeared to collide, both laughing (555).  While we talked, he constantly petted JaiDee.  When Katai entered the shop, JaiDee went over to her and sat, then snuggled up to her.  He’s learning to do that instead of jumping.

By the time we got home for lunch, our little man was worn out.  His morning actually started with a brief walk on the track, and then a bowl of ice at The Wanderer.  The kid gets around.  Later, there was a 40 minute walk in the evening at the government building.  Sunday we did coffee and ice at Chivit Thamma Da and had lunch with Cat at The Wanderer.  JaiDee was a perfect gentleman at both places.

Life with TongDee is going great for the humans, not so great for JaiDee.  He is the reason we brought her home, yet she wants nothing to do with him.  We keep reminding her that she has just one job, play with the puppy.  I really don’t know how dogs think, but there are times when I think we got played by this one.  They did have a great exercise session over the weekend.  We had them both in the front yard and Natcha called TongDee to come over to her.  JaiDee came bounding over, naive and ready to play.  TongDee growled and chased him around the yard.  This happened a bunch of times and we now know that she’s fast, but JaiDee’s a little faster.

Today was Songkran.  Well, it was the first installment of the three day holiday.  We’re not sure when the other two days will be scheduled.  We didn’t drive in the areas where people normally play with water (throwing it) so we're not sure if it was actually celebrated.  Tomorrow is the celebration of The King’s birthday, and it’s also a national holiday.

Today’s photo was taken at Okra Restaurant in 2017.  The chef is smoking the salmon at the table for a salad.  Amazing.

Have a Great Week.      Mask up over your nose, wash your hands, be safe.

                      Peace,

Friday Funnies

Hi,

The weather high today was 96° with over 50% humidity.  It’s supposed to be the same for tomorrow.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “Save Your Love For Me” by Nancy Wilson and the Cannonball Adderly Quintet.  Here is the recording:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnEl-36TL4A  My cousin Trudye and I had a chance to see them live at The Shrine Auditorium, a sweet memory.  And now, on to ‘Old School Friday’, and something really old (555).  “You don’t remember me, but I remember you.  ’Twas not so long ago, you broke my heart in two.  __ __ __ __, pain in my heart caused by you.”  Hint:  This time the singer really was little.  The title is what happens when you cry in bed.

This morning we did the usual things around the house, and then went to The Wanderer.  It was a quick trip for JaiDee since we had to drop him off at home and go to Makro.  I think he wanted to do more in the street, but they’re just not ready for him (555).  It’s comforting to know that the larger stores are still being vigilant about their safety protocols.  Not only that, everyone in the store is wearing a mask.  There are folks who don’t understand that you have to cover your nose as well as your mouth, but most get it.

JaiDee and TongDee are still not on the same page.  He wants to be friends and play, she wants to growl.  Even though that’s her thing, she comes around when we’re hanging out on the front porch.  It’s like she wants to be around us, as long as the overly happy dog stays cool.  After a week and a day, she has changed a lot.  Maybe next week she’ll change some more.  Feeling anxious in The Big Brown House.

Tomorrow begins a four day weekend for Thailand.  I’m guessing many places will remain open to take advantage of the ‘make-up’ business that was lost during the lockdown.  Most of the schools just recently opened, which makes me wonder how it will be next Wednesday when students have to return and sit still in their seats.  Hmm.

Today’s photo was taken while we were just cooling it on the front porch.  That’s a piece of a rawhide bone hanging out of Mr. Cool’s mouth.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.         Time for the ‘Funnies’.

                              Peace,
                                        Danny

Deception

Hi,

The day began as usual, and by mid-afternoon big, dark clouds began closing in on us.  Just as we went out in our swim suits, it began to rain.  It was light and short, but one never knows how hard or how long rain will last.  No swim today.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune appears to be unknown to most of you.  That’s alright, I think you’ll like it when you hear it.  “Run away, if I were wise I’d run away, but like a fool I stay and pray you’ll __ __ __ __ __.”  Clue: What are piggy banks used for?  It’s a stretch, but it’s all I got (555).

The World Health Organization is making a documentary film about Thailand and New Zealand as successful models for handling and curbing Covid-19.  There are some who believe that the story is not finished.  If large numbers of travelers and workers from other countries are allowed to enter Thailand without safeguards, the so-called Second Wave might arrive with them.

JaiDee has suddenly reach a new level in his understanding of a few things.  When someone approaches him, he sits and waits to be petted, as opposed to rushing up and jumping on them.  This makes him more fun to take out.  The reality is, he stores up that crazy energy and unleashes it on us.  He has so much energy.  This morning, while we were getting ready, Natcha took both dogs and exercised them.  She got TongDee running and sent her off around the house, and ran JaiDee on a leash in the front yard.  I wish I could have seen that.

Today’s photo was taken this evening on our walk at the government building.  Lisa and JaiDee in a moment with no traffic.

There are people on our walks that know JaiDee from walking with others who know him.  We’ll pass someone who says, ‘Hi JaiDee’ and we don’t now them, but they know him.  There are a few that he recognizes and veers over to the other lane so they can pet his head as they pass.  I guess we are his entourage.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                      Peace,
                                Danny

Anger

Hi,

Chiang Rai weather went in and out of looking like a bright, sunny day and a dark, rainy one.  It never rained, but was just hot.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song was “Sunny” by Bobby Hebb.  Here’s a ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune from 1962 that you might know:  “Wish I knew why I’m so in love with you, no one in this world will do.  Darling, please __ __ __ __ __.”
Hint:  It’s from a collaboration between a famous jazz quintet and smooth singer.

TongDee has decided that she likes hanging out on the front porch, the carport, and the back patio.  When we returned from coffee this morning, she was standing at the kitchen sink with Natcha, looking out at us.  That was a big move.  She’d only been in the house once before today.  At one point, Natcha went out to the store and when she returned, TongDee was sitting in the driveway waiting for her.  JaiDee is a ball of frustration.  There is a dog to play with, in his yard, and all he can do is watch.  Today was more of the same, although this evening Lisa and Natcha did get them within a foot of each other, being calm, but TongDee was still growling at JaiDee.  Progress was made and that’s enough.

Today’s photo is TongDee smiling.

In talking to Cat this evening, we’re getting caught up on local news.  Next Monday Thailand will be celebrating Songkran.  Schools will be closed and I’m sure water will be flying everywhere.   On Tuesday there will be celebrations in honor of The King’s Birthday.  There are two more days of Songkran that officials are trying to decide how to observe.  It’s a 3 days holiday, and they intend to observe them.  Hmm.

Yesterday, Cat had to teach an extra class.  Normally, the classes are around 20 students, but the extra class was in a large auditorium, with no microphone and was hoarse all evening.  She is getting used to getting up early and going to work, and staying flexible.

The Bangkok Motor Show is up and running, after a delay.  They are enforcing strict safety and distancing measures.  There were some very glamorous photos of new cars and motorcycles from around the world, along with the ever-present ‘Pretties’, all wearing face shields.

It feels like a Wacky Wednesday.    It’s still time to stay safe.  There is a ‘Second Wave’ in many parts of the world.

                      Peace,
                                Danny

Common

Hi,

Last night and this morning we had rain.  It was very light, but it was steady rain just the same.  The temperature today was cooler and that was very nice.

I got several responses on the ‘Easy Monday’ song.  I know a lot of you were humming it all day.  Tell me if you know:
“__, thank you for the sunshine bouquet.  __, thank you for the love you’ve brought my way.  You gave to me your all and all, now I feel ten feet tall.  __, one so true, I love you.”  Clue:  Part of the weather forecast in many places.

The adventure today was a trip to Big C.  Yeah, I know, seems rather routine at this point, but sometimes it’s the travel and the observations that make life exciting.  Take today, for instance.  On the Super Highway, crews were out with big trucks working on something that was, at first, hard to figure out.  On our return trip I realized they were preparing to install another giant light pole.  The kind that can illuminate an entire neighborhood.  We don’t drive down the highway at night so I’ve never seen them in action.  Must add to the to-do list (555).

Yesterday we saw lots of yellow.  That’s because Monday’s color is yellow and both the former and the present King were born on Monday.  The King’s birthday is later this month and it seems that there is a new interest in having a big celebration.  When we went to the market last week, we saw several shops full of yellow shirts and jackets.  It does add a little something to the day.

When we woke up and realized it had rained overnight, our first thought was TongDee.  She sleeps outside and we weren’t sure if she would be dry.  Apparently she spent the night on one of the porches or the carport because she was dry.  She is slowly getting comfortable with the property.  She moves from resting place to resting place, hanging out, watching what happens inside through the big windows.  There is still a resistance to making friends with JaiDee.  The consistent guidance on all things of this nature is patience.  Tell that to JaiDee.  He finally gets a dog to play with and the dog won’t play.  You can ‘feel’ the frustration in his whines and barks.  His persistence will win in the end.

Today’s photo is a recent addition to the drink menu at The Wanderer.  I tried it the other day and I’ll say, ‘Interesting, but a little sweet’.  It’s espresso over lime soda.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

                    Peace,
                              Danny

Forward

Hi,

Someplace in the weekend, there was light rain for a very short time.  It’s mostly been the same thing every day, just the clouds are different.

The ‘Old School Friday’ song was “Western Movies” by The Olympics.  Here’s an ‘Easy Monday’ tune you should all remember:  “__, yesterday my life was filled with rain.  __, you smiled at me and really eased the pain.  Now the dark days are done, and the bright days are here, my __ one shines so sincere.  __, one so true, I love you.”  Hint:
Released in ’66, the title is a name, but is also used as a weather condition.  There, I’ve said too much.

Saturday morning we went to Chivit Thamma Da for coffee and scones.  As we were leaving, we saw Joakim, one of the owners, and as we stood talking, his dog Nam Kok came over.  JaiDee and Nam Kok had a very mellow greeting and seemed like they were ready to go cruise the restaurant.  Just then, Joakim’s two little Shitzus came rushing down the outside stairs, barking at JaiDee.  Nam Kok jumped in front of JaiDee and barked at the little ones.  It was clear that he didn’t want them messing with his friend.  We all were quite impressed by this.  Joakim told us that anytime we wanted to go away for a weekend, JaiDee was welcome to stay with them.

TongDee continues to get better.  We can tell that she’s still traumatized so we’re giving her all the space she needs.  She is gradually coming closer to the house when we’re not outside.  TongDee follows Natcha around outside and this evening she came when Lisa called her.  She and JaiDee have been near each other through a big window, but nothing really close.  Every time he wants to initiate a greeting or play, she bares her fangs and growls at him.  She was at the shelter for one month, and was hanging out with two males, so we know that in time she’ll loosen up and they’ll be friends.  He is more than ready to play.

Today’s photo was taken at Browney Pet World.

Sunday we had lunch at The Wanderer with our friend Lisa and her dad, Edwin.  JaiDee was a little gentleman, letting us eat and talk without too much ‘busy’.  At one point, I took him for a walk and we went down to the river.  That’s where the geese stay and he’d never seen them.  They are the alarm system if anyone enters the property from the river.  They didn’t see us when we first went down, but on the way back I could hear them quietly talking amongst themselves.  Then they moved closer to the side of their enclosure near us.  JaiDee was totally taken with the 5 big birds.  He didn’t move.  I finally had to drag him away, and through it all they didn’t sound the alarm.  I’m sure that next time we go, he’ll want to go and see the geese again.  I will be sure to take my phone so I can get some photos.

Have a Great Week.

                        Peace,
                                  Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

The weather today was almost a carbon copy of yesterday.  Maybe a tiny bit cooler.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “The Girl From Ipanema” sung by Astrid Gilberto, featuring Stan Getz.  This is the day we go way back in time.  ‘Old School Friday’ this week may seem like a ‘Zany Day’ song.  “To save my soul I can’t get a date, baby’s got it turned on channel 8.  Now Wyatt Erp and Big Cheyenne, they’re comin’ through the T.V. shootin’ up the land.  Ah…um, my baby loves __ __, my baby love __ __.  Bam, bam, shoot ‘em up pow.  Ah…um my baby loves __ __.”  Hint:  I think it should be obvious.  The old west is involved.

Day two of our adventures with TongDee.  She slept outside in her ‘Den’ last night.  This morning she crept out and ate her breakfast and then retreated back into her sanctuary.  While we were out with JaiDee, Natcha worked her magic and got Tong out of the bush and managed to give her a bath.  It took Natcha pulling from the front, and Gong pushing from the back, but they got her to the driveway.  After her bath they put her in the dog run in the back yard.  I think that’s the first time she’d seen that yard.  Tong slept most of the day.  Sometimes she’d wake up and just take in the scenery, but not much else.  Tonight she has a light over the dog run and the gate is open.  Hopefully she won’t got back to her hideaway in the bushes.

At the same time that TongDee was getting her bath, we stopped by Work@Home to visit JaiDee’s aunt and uncle, Katai and Towan.  Neither seemed to be around and we were just standing in the parking lot when JaiDee made a lunging move.  I turned and it was Towan.  There was immediate recognition and the love-fest had begun.  They were each hugging the other, JaiDee’s tail going very fast, and a big smile on his face.  It took awhile for puppy boy to calm down.

Today’s photo is the greeting between JaiDee, Towan and Katai.

This extra photo is TongDee yesterday at the entrance to her condo.

The afternoon was pretty mellow.  We got in a nice swim while the dogs were asleep.  After dinner we took JaiDee for his evening walk.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.         Time for the ‘Funnies’.   This is another Formula 1 weekend, Zoom.

                          Peace,
                                    Danny

Help

Hi,

A hot day, in the 90’s with big, puffy clouds.  The forecast for rain must have been from another week, or another universe.  It did not happen here.

This week’s ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ seems to be more familiar.  Here’s more of the tune that introduced Bossa Nova to America.  “When she walks it’s like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gently, that when she passes, each one she passes goes, aaah.  Ohhhh, but he watches so sadly, how can he tell her he loves her.  Yes, he would give his heart gladly, but instead when she walks to the sea, she looks straight ahead not at he”.  Clue:  There is a famous saxophone player featured on this recording.  The lead singer’s silky voice works well in contrast with the horn.  Her first name reminds me of something flying through space.

Today was the day we introduced JaiDee to Doy Din Dang, the ceramic compound in the woods north of town.  We got there before the owners, which gave us a chance to order coffee and relax.  JaiDee got a little sniffing tour of the place and had to smell every giant ceramic pot.  When Tamako arrived it was a reunion.  We hadn’t seen her in months.  We saw Somluk at an art opening, but it wasn’t the same.  Today we got caught up on what has been happening, dabbled in politics, reflected on the virus.  We always cover a lot of territory and learn new things.

I guess everyone may have heard that the 2021 Rose Parade has been canceled.  That was a real morning jolt.  That event has been a New Years day staple for as long as I can remember.  For many years we would go to Pasadena/Altadena and watch the replay with my mom while she made waffles.  Hmm, reflections on sweet times.

We have been talking about getting another dog as a companion for JaiDee.  Lisa posted what we were looking for on a couple of Chiang Rai expat sites and we ended up talking with a friend that we’ve known for many years.  She is helping a newish rescue organization place dogs.  Today we just jumped and said we’d meet her and go to this place called Chances Foundation.   I’m glad she rode with us and directed me because it was way out in the country, among the rice fields.  At the main location, our friend Kay introduced us to the women who operate the service.  We also met a bunch of really cute dogs.  Most of them were boys who seemed eager to make friends.  At the second location we met a ‘Golden Mix’ they had named Tong Dee (Good Gold).  She was exactly what we were looking for in age and size.  She had been there for one month and was just coming out of her shell.  We decided to take her home and see what happens.  Understanding what these dogs have been through gives us the patience to wait and see.  Kay said she really didn’t respond to her name yet, so we altered it to ‘Tong Tong’ (Gold Gold), so as not to confuse JaiDee.

Here we see Tong Tong on her way to her new home.

Meanwhile, back at The Big Brown House, it took about 20 minutes to get Tong Tong out of the van.  Then she went out onto the front lawn and finally found a ‘den’ under a giant bush.  She came out a few times, but didn’t really want to get too close.  She ate dinner left for her, but refused to ‘meet’ JaiDee.  We took him to her den on a leash and coaxed her out, but when he got too close, she snapped.  We left her alone after that.  Natcha is our resident ‘whisperer’, able to get ‘Tong’ to come out and eat from her hand.  Maybe tomorrow she can get a much needed bath and a trip to the vet’s.  Life just got very interesting, some more.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                       Peace,

Gentle

Hi,

We had our second day in a row with no rain.  Early this morning the sky was totally clear.  Later, clouds appeared far away, but never changed the day.  It was hot.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song was “Hot Fun In The Summertime” by Sly & The Family Stone.  It’s ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ time:
“Tall and tan and young and lovely, __ __ __ __ goes walking and when she passes, each one she passes goes ahhh.”
Hint:  This should be easy.  Jazz is a big part of Brazilian music.  That’s where this is from.  A specific seaside town is mentioned.

We tried to think of a new place to take JaiDee, but weren’t sure so we went back to Chivit.  With The Wanderer closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, we’re at a loss.  There were a lot of guests at Chivit this morning.  When we got to our table, they greeted us with a chorus of ‘Good morning’.  I guess this means we’re regulars.  JaiDee’s ice arrived right away and it was like family.

After coffee we went to Browney Pet World for vitamins and treats.  JaiDee was on his most charming behavior and was greeted by one of his friends as soon as we walked in.  In the course of shopping, we met a woman with a 6 month old Husky.  She showed us photos and took pics of JaiDee.  His gentle leader collar is what started the whole thing.  As soon as Lisa explained that he was easier to control, she was interested.  On the way to the check-out we saw a man with a beautiful orange parrot on his shoulder.  Wow.

Today’s photo is JaiDee at the check-out, making sure they put all of his stuff in the bag.

There is major drama going on in Rayong.  The whole town has basically been shut down as a result of a soldier from Egypt breaking a self-imposed isolation, and then testing positive for Covid-19.  He and his friends visited a major mall and several other spots around town.  Now, over 1800 local citizens are being kept at home, and all the schools are closed.  The Egyptian government has apparently apologized, but business in Rayong has come to a stop.  Hotels are down 90% and everyone is afraid to do anything.

This afternoon we got a message from our friends at Doy Din Dang, letting us know that their coffee shop had reopened.  When Lisa wrote to ask about bringing the puppy, they were more than welcoming.  There used to be local stray dogs hanging around, but now they’ve moved on.  Tomorrow we will take JaiDee to another magical wooded area.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                      Peace,
                                Danny

Forgotten

Hi,

This morning, while we were talking to Lisa’s dad, Joe, we watched a big, dark cloud move into the neighborhood.  All of a sudden we were in a heavy downpour.  The thing lasted about 5 minutes and it was over.  So Thailand.

A few readers recognized the ‘Easy Monday’ song.  It was by a Bay Area (California) family affair.
“I cloud nine when I want to.  Out of school, yeah.  Country fair in the country sun, and everything, it’s true, ooh, yeah.  __ __ __ __ __, __ __ __ __ __, __ __ __ __ __, __ __ __ __ __.  First of the fall and then she goes back, bye, bye, bye, bye there…”  Clue:  The writing in this has some very sly touches.  It’s a seasonal thing.

We took JaiDee to Chivit Thamma Da for ice on his birthday (555).  Actually, we went for coffee and he got a lot of love.  As soon as we went in the front door he got the usual greeting from ‘His people’, but when we told them it was his birthday, well, it got a little rowdy for a moment.  This afternoon it was JaiDee who got a little rowdy, or should I say ‘naughty’.  He decided that it would be a good thing to bite his leash and jump up on us.  Two things that will bring out the word ‘No’ faster than anything else.  It wasn’t until his walk this evening that he calmed down.  “They” keep saying that he will get calmer, in six months to a year.  We’re back to the second dog concept.  He desperately needs a playmate.

Yesterday we read about a positive test for the virus in Rayong, south of Bangkok.  That is where Tatt is from.  He wrote today, telling us about it.  It’s a relatively small town so this is cause for concern.  It was another case of someone from another country that came into Thailand with the virus.  More will be revealed, but I suspect that the health authorities have already sorted it out.  Imagine, one positive test.

We wanted to send out a birthday portrait of JaiDee, but this was his mood.

Have a Happy Tuesday.          Be kind, wear a mask.

                          Peace,
                                    Danny

Boat

Hi,

The weather delivered rain on Sunday, all day.  Nothing heavy, just a constant light rain.  All the plant life loved it.  I think this kind of weather revs up teenage puppies.

The ‘Old School Friday’ song was “Drown In My Own Tears” by Ray Charles.  It’s time for an ‘Easy Monday’ tune:
“End of the spring and here she comes back.  Hi, hi, hi, hi there.  Them summer days, those summer days.
That’s when I had most of my fun back.  High, high, high, high there.  Them summer days, those summer days.”  Hint:  You might say, it’s a song about summertime.  Hmm.

My computer has decided to do it’s own thing.  It wants to have just one window open on my desktop at a time.  Things slide off to the side, completely off the screen, and when I try to get them back, I have to search for them.  So very frustrating.  Writing this message is taking longer than usual because I need to see things.  We all develop our own style of doing things, even if it’s just looking at mail.  Oh well, tomorrow we’ll go to the mall, visit the Apple Store (which is called iBeat) and get it resolved.  It will probably be some simple thing that got clicked for the sole purpose of driving me crazy.

I have been explaining to JaiDee that tomorrow (the 14th) is his birthday.  We are not having a party for him, but we have considered having a ’Survivor’s Party’ for us.  If we dressed him up with a little hat and bow-tie, he’d have them off in 2 seconds and eat them.  In lieu of a cake, we’ll just sprinkle some treats on the floor and watch him vacuum them up (555).

Today’s photo was taken on our walk by the government building.  I held the camera up so I could get a full view of the Teak forest that borders one part of the path.  The trees are protected, so it just grows and does it’s thing.

Every day we realize that there is much to be grateful for, even though things are much different than we ever imagined.  We live in an area where safety precautions are taken at most of the places we frequent.  When we are out and about, almost everyone is wearing a mask, and if you don’t have one, some stores will provide one so you can enter.

This morning Nitchanan got a van ride to school.  We were sitting on the front porch with JaiDee, watching the morning rain shower and she gave us a very enthusiastic ‘bye bye’ as they left.  This afternoon it was back on the motorbike for the ride home.  Since schools are now open, we’re seeing the private ‘School Buses’ around town.  Things are slowly creeping up on normal, or at least how it used to be.

Have a Great Week.

                       Peace,
                                 Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

Chiang Rai had another rainless day.  Not complaining a bit, just noting that a break in the rainy season is always nice.  Tomorrow should be in the high 80s (555).  It will probably go over 90.

The first song in the ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ series was “Dat Dere” by Oscar Brown, Jr.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o_8Ek9Hzu0  The music was written by jazz pianist Bobby Timmons, the lyrics by Mr. Brown. I hope you enjoy this special collaboration. Oscar was a major influence on my music back in the early 60’s.  Now it’s time to go way back with an ‘Old School Friday’ tune.  The year was 1956 and this was on the radio:  “It brings a tear into my eyes when I begin to realize.  I’ve cried so much since you’ve been gone.  I guess I’ll __ __ __ __ __.”  Hint:  Trying to keep his head above water.

Yesterday I forgot to tell you about the rest of our morning.  We took JaiDee to Dr. View, the vet, to see her groomers.  He has fur that grows between his toes (we know they’re not toes 555) and when it gets long, he slides on the floors.  He won’t let us trim the hair, but at the groomers they know what to do.  They get anywhere from 3 to 5 attendants to hold him down and they get the job done.  Lisa couldn’t go into the area to watch, but afterward she asked Dr. View how it went and she said that he was “very naughty”.  Hmm, one can only imagine.

Today our morning adventure didn’t include ‘puppy boy’.  Since it was Friday, we thought we’d get a head start on getting a few things done.  The first was a trip back to the mall.  We thought they opened at 10am so we got there a little early, had coffee at Starbuck’s and then discovered that the mall is back to the 11am start time on Fridays. We continued with our ‘quest’ and went to HomePro.  A friend in Chiang Mai raved about his air fryer, something I still don’t understand, but we decided to get one.  The answer we got, for the particular brand, was ‘no have’.  The kitchen faucet on the list was also not there.  Most of the big stores we went to didn’t have what we went for, but we managed to come home with a few small necessities.  I guess the blue shirt I was urged to buy could be considered a necessity.

While we were out, the installer from the internet company came and extended our WiFi to cover the whole house as well and Natcha and Gong’s place.  Everybody is very happy about this.

The government is going to ‘seal’ the border with Burma in order to make sure that no untested ‘visitors’ enter the country.  Apparently there have been cases of smuggling workers over the border and this is how the virus can spread.  In light of what’s happening in various parts of the world, it’s a good idea.

Since it’s almost his birthday, here’s another flashback to the real baby days.  “Baby JaiDee".

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.      Time for the ‘Funnies’.     There’s another Formula 1 race this weekend.  Zoom!

                              Peace,
                                        Danny

Win

Hi,

A day without rain is what happened today.  It was hot and humid again, but that was expected.  If it doesn’t rain tonight, the pool will be just right tomorrow.

Bravo to the two readers who knew this tune.  I’m not surprised that more of you didn’t know it, but you should.  I forgot to give this little adventure a name.  For now we’ll call it ‘Jazzy Wednesday’.  Here’s more of the song:
“Who’s that in my chair?  And what’s she doin’ there?  And oh Daddy, oh hey Daddy can I go over there?  Hey Daddy, what’s a square, and where do we get air and can I have dat big elephant over there?”  Clue:  There are no  clues.

This morning we had a coffee date with our friend John.  Before going over to The Wanderer, we took JaiDee for his morning walk.  As we were leaving the area, I spotted something in the hedge next to the van.  Someone must have found the little toy and placed it there to be found by it’s owner.

At The Wanderer, we were the only guests there and it was nice.  We talked and laughed and shared stories of recent experiences and stuff.  We always learn something when we hang out with John.  It could also be said that we get very silly when we hang out with John.  Everybody needs some silly in their day (555).

It’s that time of year when we have to do a check-in with the Immigration Department.  Because of covid, we’re doing it by mail again this time.  We drove up to the drive-thru window at the post office in Ban Du, and took care of business.  It’s a relief to get those kinds of things done.  Before, it was easier to go to the office, say hello to the nice officer while he stamped and stapled and then leave.  Ah well, nice to be here.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.   These days it’s more important to listen to health officials than politicians.  Be Safe!

                      Peace,
                                Danny

Sign

Hi,

For the first time in a long time we woke up to a cool morning.  "Fear not" said the genie, "I can have it hot by noon."  And so it was.

The ‘Easy Monday’ tune was “You Are The Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder.  On Wednesdays I’m going to start a new segment that was suggested by my friend Michael T.  He asked, “What about Big Band and Jazz?”  OK, let’s see what I can come up with and how much you know.  Some tunes will be hard to use because they are instrumental.  A lot of vocal jazz consists of songs that many artists have interpreted.  Anyway, we’ll start off with a tune whose music was written in 1961 and lyrics in ’62.  The vocalist wrote lyrics to a tune by a jazz pianist.  The result is a magical tune about the questions of a child.  “Hey daddy, what’s __ __?  And what’s that doing there? And hey daddy, hey, look that over there.  And what’s that doin’ there, and where’re they going there?  And daddy, can I have that big elephant over there?”  Hint:  There have been many covers of this tune.  For now, ‘Cool Points’ if you know the original artist/writer.

Our big adventure today was a trip to the mall.  That was, of course, after an excursion to Chivit with JaiDee.  We both tried different drinks, for a change.  JaiDee stuck with the ice.  Lisa’s Berry Berry is a blend of, you guessed it, various berries and ice.  In the west it might be called a Berry Slurpy.  I had a lemon honey soda.

Meanwhile, back at the mall, our primary mission was to try to understand a bill from our TV provider.  After sitting for a long time in the common area of the mall, Lisa was allowed to go in and sit with an ‘associate’.  I sat outside and waited for a long time.  I spent part of the time looking for a 9 volt battery.  None of the so-called ‘tech’ stores had one, but the camera store directed me to Mr. D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself).  I have seen the store in passing, but never went inside.  One could go crazy, buying lots of things you might need, or have an idea of how to make something.  Totally fascinating.  Aisle after aisle of ‘stuff’.  That stuff that you take home and never touch, but it’s cool and you have to have it.  They had the battery, the store brand, and it cost $.49.  I’ll be back (555).  Lisa finally emerged from her encounter with a team of young associates, shaking her head.  Every time she asked a question, they had to call someone or go to the back room to get the answer.  More training is clearly needed.  Another trip will be necessary.

Today’s photo is from 2017.  This little scene is underneath the sink in the toilet room a salon.  Land of Smiles.

This afternoon we had a mellow swim while watching the giant dark clouds dance around in the sky.  Shadows would come and go with no sign of rain.  Not long after we got out, we heard splashing and shrieking in the pool.  It was Nitchanan, her little cousin and two of Gong’s sisters.  It was nice to see the pool being used to bring such joy.

Feels like a Wacky Wednesday.

                         Peace,
                                   Danny
