Friday Funnies

 Hi,

Our weather was mostly light sprinkles off and on during the day.  At times the air was a little cool, which was very pleasant after Bangkok.

Well, the ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “Misty”, made famous by Johnny Mathis.  There’s also a great version by Sarah Vaughn.  Here’s an ‘Old School Friday song that should also be easy:  “I’m going to __ __, __ __ here I come.  I’m going to __ __, __ __ here I come.  They got some crazy lil’ women there and I’m gonna get me one.”  Hint:  The title is the name of a city in the ‘show me’ state.

There are times when things get translated from Thai to English and one knows the intention, but it just doesn’t sound quite right.  On our latest adventure, at every check point in the airports, when showing a picture ID, they needed to see our faces.  Several times I forgot, and was asked to ‘Open your mask, please.’

Today we got back into the rhythm of things.  We went to The Wanderer with JaiDee and had a quiet time in the ‘Glass House’.  The visit wasn’t a long one since we had to go to Makro.  After dropping JaiDee off at the house, we went to do some shopping.  Makro has updated one of it’s temp-checks with a device that measures your temperature by scanning your eye.  I don’t know if it’s any quicker, but it’s probably more accurate than the handheld models.  I guess, since it’s looking like we will all be scrutinized for quite a bit longer, they are investing in more high tech equipment.

This afternoon we met with some of my friends who live in Mae Chan.  They were exploring a place near us called “The Secret Garden”.  It’s about 10 minutes from our house, on a winding road in the hills.  The atmosphere was very peaceful and the desserts were great.  We probably won’t put it on our ‘regular’ list, but it was a fun outing with folks we haven’t seen in months.  We’re going to meet up at The Wanderer soon.  They’re going to keep an eye out for places we could take JaiDee.

Here’s a photo of some early holiday decorations at one of the malls in Bangkok.

To go along with the spirit of the tree (555), here’s what I call ‘Shoe Bling’.  They also had them in black.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.    Time for the ‘Funnies’.  It’s an oldie, a sign of the times.

                         Peace,

Victories

 Hi,

Rain has come to Thailand.  Typhoon Molave is moving from east to west, rolling across Viet Nam and will be drifting through Thailand any day now.  We’re getting light rain, and they say it will stay that way.  In Bangkok, we experienced the same thing this morning before we left.  The middle of Thailand is expected to be hit a little harder.

I’m not surprised that a bunch of you knew the ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune.  The most popular version was a hit in ’58.
“Walk my way and a thousand violins begin to play.  Or it might be the sound of your hello, that music I hear, I get __ the moment you’re near.  You can say that you’re leading me on, but it’s just what I want you to do.  Don’t you notice how hopelessly I’m lost, that why I’m following you.  On my own…”  Clue:  A very mellow tenor voice matched tones with an oboe on that last phrase.  Now you remember?

This morning, even before we knew it was sprinkling, we decided not to venture into ‘town’ before leaving for the airport.  We were enjoying the homey vibe around the dining room table.  There was also the fact that we would be doing a bunch of walking once we got to the airport.  We packed up and left a little early.  Khun Boonrad drove us to the airport and we got another look at the Bangkok skyline.  One thing is for sure, there is no shortage of buildings.  Whoever has the concession on cranes is doing major business.  I think about these things.

At Suvarnabhumi airport they’re using heat sensing cameras to monitor guests as they enter the building.  We saw this same technology at a couple of the malls.  It’s faster than using the individual hand-held thermometer to check everyone.  This airport is usually jammed with travelers from all over the world, but these days it’s not so busy.  Most of the travelers are taking domestic flights, since The Kingdom is not allowing many overseas visitors yet.  I saw way too many Krispy Kreme donuts today.  They have a big counter as you enter the food court in the domestic terminal.  Going in and coming out, it’s, well, you get the picture.  We had a nice flight home and Gong was waiting for us with the van.  The dogs went a little crazy when Lisa first went in, but they calmed down and finished their naps.  Back to the simple life.

Yesterday we encountered a vegetable that I had to share with you.  This goes out to all the Prince fans.

With the holidays arriving, you will no doubt be seeing and hearing a lot of advertising for a certain ‘Black Friday’ sales event.  This major mall in Bangkok has gone a step further, with a whole weekend.  This was on the side of Siam Paragon.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.          Wear your mask and stay grateful.

                             Peace,
                                       Danny

Rules

Hi,

It was another warm day in Bangkok.  There is a major storm going through Viet Nam and it’s supposed to go across Thailand, but will miss the Far North.  That means we may miss it since we go home tomorrow.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song was “One Night In Bangkok”.  Now do you see what the hints were about?  Maybe ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ will be easier.  “Look at me, I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree.  And I feel like I’m clinging to a cloud, I can’t understand, I get __, just holding your hand.”  Hint:  Sometimes it’s a weather condition, sometimes a matter of the heart.

Our day began later than the Chiang Rai usual.  By that I mean we slept in again.  Natcha told us that yesterday JaiDee got up at 6am.  Oh boy, I hope he doesn’t make that a new thing.  After coffee and toast, we got a ride to the market to pick up necessities.  We discovered a shop that was selling designer masks that were pretty cool.  Lisa got a mask that went perfectly with her blouse.  This could be a new thing, coordinating masks with outfits.  We did our little Starbuck’s bit and then walked back to the house.

For lunch, we went to a familiar place with Nita.  It’s called The Commons and features at least a dozen separate eating places under one tall roof.  We had to choose between various cultural concepts and tastes, so it took a while to decide.  It was fun noticing the little word plays that some of the vendors used for their stalls.  The photo below was one of my favorites for a chicken joint.  There is one item called ‘Mississippi Comeback Sauce’.

After lunch we went on a quest for crystalized ginger and nail polish.  Nita took us to a place called Emporium.  We were told that it’s a large grocery store.  What it actually is could best be described as a ‘High Society’ store on steroids.  I have been to fancy food stores before, but this was over the top.  The attention one receives from the black-clad service staff made it feel like a department store.  Every department had so many varieties that it could bring on a meltdown.  We found the ginger and stocked up.  An extensive search yielded no nail polish.  Nita theorized that most stores don’t stock it because there are so many nail salons that people don’t do it themselves.  Since we were already in the area, we walked across a little bridge into one of the major malls.  We went past the ‘basic’ mall business and went up to the levels where the designer stores were located.  Nita had to make a stop so we followed her into Gucci.  She was picking up a pair of sandals from a new line that is intended to put a crimp on counterfeiting.

Late this afternoon Lisa got a massage from a spa Nita goes to, right in the neighborhood.  She returned feeling refreshed and relaxed.  We had dinner at the house and had some very stimulating conversation.  Their housekeeper made Pad Thai.  She actually did it twice since the main course was with tofu that I can’t eat.  She made a separate dish for me with chicken.  That was very cool.

Tomorrow we return to Chiang Rai, but not before a morning of cruising the boulevard for coffee and last minute treats (555).  The time went by way too fast.  We have to come back and go to a few malls and see the riverside shops.

It feels like a Wacky Wednesday.

Road

 Hi,

The weather was very similar to Chiang Rai today.  It was hot and slightly humid, with a heavy cloud cover.  It didn’t look like it was going to rain, just bright gray.

I’m surprised that only a few of you knew the ‘Easy Monday’ song.  I’m here in Bangkok and no one knows the song.
“__, Oriental setting and the city don’t know what the city is getting.  The creme de la creme of the chess world in a show with everything but Yul Brynner.  Time flies doesn’t seem a minute since the Tirolean Spa had the chess boys in it.  All change, don’t you know that when you play at this level, there’s no ordinary venue….__ __ __ __ and the world’s your oyster.  The bars are temples but the pearls ain’t free…”  Clue:  One city has been mentioned many times in this post.  It’s a key word, especially when you only have one night to solve this mystery.

Our first day in Bangkok (BKK) and we slept in.  What a treat.  We had toast and coffee and decided to go to the main boulevard and look for a place that served breakfast.  What we found was a lot of Japanese restaurants, tons of Thai food, and nothing with a western breakfast.  We ended up at a place called The Greyhound.  By that time is was lunchtime so that’s what we ate.  It was just enough fuel to send us out into the street in search of coffee.  We went to the local Starbuck’s and hung out.

Out on the boulevard we saw this little coffee stand with the most unique name.

During this morning of walking around looking, there was a shadow following us.  That unknown factor of where and when the next demonstration would occur and would it interfere with the exhibit opening tonight.  Nobody knew, but everybody had a theory or thought.  Finally, around 4:25 we got the call that the exhibit opening was going to happen.  Other events were cancelled, but this one was a ‘go’.  The plan was for us to take the train to the end of the line and we’d be at the art center.  Khun Boonrad, James and Nita’s driver, took us to the train and we were on our way.  We got to the Bangkok Art and Culture Center just as they were introducing the artists for the group photo.  Lisa made it in time and we could breathe.  Our friend Lisa from Chiang Rai was there.  It was nice to see a friendly face.  A little support always helps.  The exhibit was small, but very interesting.  We also met two new friends that we were introduced to by a mutual friend in the States.  Lisa was the only non-Thai in the exhibit.  We got the evolution of the whole thing from Count Jerry, who was a major supporter and who invited Lisa to participate.

When it was over we went next door to Siam Center, one of many department stores all in a row, and had dinner. We ended up at Sizzler and our friend Lisa told us she had tried the Beyond Burger.  I have been very interested in this idea so we ate there.  It was a one time thing, because of the high sodium content, but it was good.  Strolling back to the exit made me want to return to look some more.  We caught the train back to our station, took a taxi from there and got home safe and sound.

Tomorrow we have a full day with no agenda.  Time to make a list of things we’d like to do on this rare visit to the big city.

Have a Happy Tuesday.       Don’t forget to wear your mask when you vote.

                    Peace,

Peace

Hi,

The weather in Bangkok is very similar to that in Chiang Rai.  Today it was in the low 90’s, tomorrow in the mid to high 80’s.

The ‘Old School Friday’ song was “Sweet Little Sixteen” by Chuck Berry.  ‘Easy Monday’ has been around here for a long time.  'This should be easy’, he said.  “__ __ __ __ makes a hard man humble, not much between despair and ecstasy.  __ __ __ __ and the tough guys tumble, can’t be too careful with your company.  I can feel the Devil walking next to me.”  Hint:  A key word in the title is the name of a city that will be in the conversation this evening.  Where am I?

Last night (Sunday) we got serious about packing for our trip to Bangkok.  It wasn’t until Saturday night that we really declared that we’d go.  The reason for our hesitation has been the demonstrations in the streets of Bangkok (BKK).  They have been enormous in number, and while peaceful, there have been moments of backlash by the authorities.  Being of ‘sound mind’, I’m not going to go into the details of the reasons why, you can find it all in major news outlets on the internet.  I will say that this ‘thing’ is not going away quietly.  It has become a very sophisticated creature that stays one step ahead of those trying to stop it.  As a result, no one knows where the next gathering will be until the afternoon before it happens.

The opening event for the art exhibit that Lisa is participating in will take place on Tuesday at 6pm.  It will be at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center.  The area where the gallery is located is also where several demonstrations have been held.  Hopefully, the location of Tuesday night's gathering will not be in the same neighborhood.  Thousands of people in the streets can really spoil an art opening.  Anyway, that’s why we’re here.  I’ll let you know tomorrow if it happened.

Sunday afternoon we went to the home of Somluk (master ceramicist) and Tamako.  They had told us about the trees that they’re growing from seeds and offered to give us some.  We hung out in the house and talked for about an hour, discussing art, politics, health and animals.  Then we went out to his ‘botanical nursery’.  I had no idea that he was such a botanist.  There were various small palm and coffee trees, which we brought home.  We’ll plant them when we return from BKK.

This table shows one of the many ‘collections’ of ceramic objects we encountered on our Sunday adventure.

Today was the first time we had traveled anywhere since our winter visit to the States.  Many little things to remember while packing.  So far, I think we remembered everything.  Going to the airport and waiting and boarding during the Covid era is quite different.  There were not as many seats available in the waiting area but we managed to find two.  For the most part, people were covered and doing the right things.  The flight attendants all wore gloves, masks, and safety glasses for the whole flight.  I remember that one of their names was ‘Ping-Pong’.  Play names are big.  One of the mottos of the fight against the virus is:  “Together We Can”.  I like this.  It scrolls on my phone, courtesy of my carrier, D-Tac.  You also see it on the mirrors in the airport bathrooms.  It’s a unifying idea that seems to be working.

Normally, the foot traffic through the airport is busy, dodging people and luggage carts, etc.  Today things were wide open.  There were travelers, but a lot less that the last time we were there.  It was the same at the taxi stand.  Not as many cars, and it was very laid back.  The trip into town was quick, and the surface streets were not congested at all.  There were no demonstrations and we think Loy Krathong may have something to do with it.  Speaking of the holiday, we’re getting a break from the nightly music and fireworks concert for the nights that we’re in BKK.

We’re staying with our friends Nita and James.  Their house is in a quiet little neighborhood that is surrounded by giant cranes that are busy building more tall buildings.  Right now, they have a view of a little ‘jungle’ that has some very entertaining squirrels.  Lisa went to the local market, which features a lot of western foods, and also a pet supply store to get treats for the dogs.  See, when we get home, the first thing they’ll want to know is, “What did you bring us?”.  During dinner, we talked about how not traveling felt, and the various adjustments we’ve had to make.  Life goes on and it’s still pretty wonderful.

Have a Great Week.

                         Peace,

Friday Funnies

 Hi,

Today the weather felt like summertime.  I guess we got a pass on that winter thing for the time being.  I’m OK with that.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “Fly Me To The Moon” as made famous by Frank Sinatra and anybody who played Vegas (observation from my brother).  It was written by Bart Howard.  Count Basie and his orchestra accompanied Sinatra and he's been credited as the writer, but he wasn’t.  Now you know.  Time for ‘Old School Friday’ and another  old song I think you should know:  “They’re really rockin’ in Boston, in Pittsburg, Pa.  Deep in the heart of Texas, and ‘round the Frisco Bay.  All over St. Louis, way down in New Orleans, all the cats wanna dance with __ __ __.”  Hint:  This 1958 ‘Old School’ is by the man I consider the ‘Father of Rock & Roll’, the man who made the ‘Duck Walk’ a thing, taught all the tricks to all the kids, aka Johnny B. Goode.  The song is a tribute to the fans of a budding musical form.

This morning we left the house without the dog.  We explained to him that Big C still doesn’t allow dogs.  He took it well.  (555)  When we got home from our errands, the players were warming up across the river.  All afternoon and into this evening we have been serenaded by bass guitar and bass drum.  I’m sure there’s something else going on, but we can’t hear it.  We also had the added treat of another band playing at the apartments behind us.  They didn’t go as long, yet, but it was still a little confusing as to what to listen to.  It seemed like when the band behind us stopped, someone started setting off fireworks.  It was just another lazy afternoon in the village.

The reason for all this celebration is commemorating the death of King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V.  He is credited with being the King who saved Siam from colonization and moved the country into the modern world.  He ended a form of slavery and traveled to the West and negotiated with the rest of the world.  Rama V is like a folk hero to many Thais and he still commands the respect of the populace.

At 15 months old, this morning JaiDee decided to try and pee like a big boy.  He went to his favorite plant and lifted his leg, only to topple over.  Maybe it takes practice.  Here he is with his composure regained.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.   Time for the ‘Funnies’, and a reminder about the Formula 1 race in Portugal.  Zoom

Diversity

 Hi,

The weather was warmer today.  In fact, last night was warmer too.  I’m beginning to think that our forecasters are on vacation, and are just phoning it in, or throwing darts at a board (555).

So, a bunch of you got the ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune.  Here’s the second verse just in case you want to keep singing:
“Fill my heart with song and let me sing for ever more.  You are all I long for, all I worship and adore.  In other words, please be true.  In other words, I love you.”  Clue:

This morning’s adventure was a trip to Doy Din Dang, the ceramic studio and gift shop north of Chiang Rai.  We went to see our friends Tamako and Somluk.  JaiDee was very happy that he got to go also.  We had another of our stimulating conversations on the state of things, including our health.  Somluk had to have the same procedure that I had and this was the first time seeing him in months.  We compared experiences and how we’re doing now.  It’s nice to have someone to talk with about it, face-to-face.  We lamented the initial diet changes but laughed at how it’s better now.  JaiDee was a pretty calm puppy for most of the visit, and that was good.  When he sensed that we were about to leave, that’s when he got impatient.  As we drove out of the village he got to see lots of dogs, and a young cow, which really blew his mind.  I wish I had a photo of his face.

Today’s photo was taken in the village of Din Dang (dirt red), which shows a clear influence of the artists in the area.  The first construction is two Hill Tribe women, the second is a Sci-Fi Monster.

Tonight we did our walk around the house and I’m now doing 30 minutes at a good pace.  Things are improving in the stamina department.

There was a brief blast of loud, live music from across the river.  I guess they’re letting us know that the time is getting near.  Loy Krathong will be there for 5 days.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                             Peace,

Great

 Hi,

It’s strange, how acclimated one can get to a certain temperature range.  Then when it changes, it feels very dramatic.  We are now averaging low 70’s at night and it feels like it’s freezing.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song that was not so easy, was “Blue Monday” by Fats Domino.  It’s ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ time:
“__ __ __ __ __, let me play among the stars.  Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.  In other words, hold my hand.  In other words, baby kiss me.”  Hint:  Written in ’54, but became a hit in ’64 when sung by a guy with blue eyes.  Flying is involved.

This morning JaiDee got to go to The Wanderer.  They have moved their operations into the original building.  Most of the furniture has been uncovered outside and the place is beginning to look like ‘itself’.  We sat in our ‘new’ usual spot because there was a really cute brown cat hanging out in the big room.  JaiDee was pretty mellow until we were about to leave and he saw Khwan.  He tried to calm down but it was too much to bear.

Today was a ‘Double Day’ in that we went to two of our regular places in the same day.  We had a luncheon date with our friends Jimmy and Poui at Chivit Thamma Da.  We have known Poui since our early days in Chiang Rai.  She had a tiny shop in the Night Bazaar where she sold hand-made earrings and bracelets.  She and Jimmy live at Santiburi Golf Course and Residence.  Jimmy likes to play golf, and was telling us that most courses in Thailand have drastically cut their fees in order to keep their staff employed.  We hadn’t visited with the two of them in a very long time.  When we were talking about dogs, and there was lots of dog talk, Jimmy suggested we link TongTong to JaiDee so she could learn to walk on a leash from JaiDee’s lead.  He said this is how they train husky pups in Alaska, where he lived for years.  We tried it and it has potential.  When we mentioned that we’d be in town for the holidays, they invited us to Christmas dinner at their house.  We’ll be having turkey in Thailand.  Oh boy.

Tomorrow is massage day at The Big Brown House.  If I can stand it, I’m going for 2 hours.  I have had a gradual improvement in certain areas since last week’s massage, so I’ll just let go a little more.

The driveway circle is doing it’s own thing and we love it.

Feels like a Wacky Wednesday.     Don’t forget to wear your mask.  That ‘thing’ never really left.

                       Peace,
                                 Danny

Thinking

 Hi,

The sky threatened rain for most of the day.  There were sprinkles off and on, but mostly cloudy sunshine.  It is still cold which leads me to believe that the Chiang Rai ‘winter’ is here.

The ‘Easy Monday’ song got past most of you.  I must admit, it is a very old song.  Here’s the last verse:  “Sunday mornin’ my head is bad.  Though it’s worth it for the time that I had.  But I’ve got to get my rest, ‘cause __ a mess. __ __, I hate __ __…..”  Clue:  Sung by a piano player who told us about a hill where he found his thrill, back in ’56.  He was a little on the chubby side.

This morning JaiDee got very upset with us when he realized he wasn’t going with us to the mall.  He knows the time for the morning adventure, so he was waiting.  Some days it just doesn’t work.  We arrived before the opening, so we had coffee at Starbuck’s before tackling errands.

Driving through town, one is saddened to see so many shops shut down, apparently for good.  Some small outfits just couldn’t wait it out long enough.  Many had to return to the country to pick crops for survival pay.

At the end of this month Thailand will be facing another challange: the Festival of Loy Krathong.  It’s listed as beginning either on the 31st of October, or the 1st of November, and running for 5 days.  At any rate, it is a time for people to gather at a river or lake and place a flower basket (Krathong) into the water.  Across the river from us is the area where Chiang Rai folks gather to do this.  It will be interesting to see how the social distancing works out.  There will probably be many who will opt to find a remote section of shore to place their Krathong in the water.  I have a spot in mind as I type.  Hmm.

Today’s photo is ‘The Kids’ doing battle on the front lawn.  They always make it look scarier than it is.  They seem to know just how to bite the right way (except when JaiDee gets too excited).  Yesterday four women from Chance, the rescue organization that gave us TongTong, came over to pick up a donation of dog food.  We heard today that the head of the group was very moved to know that one of their dogs was in a happy home.  We’re moved too.

Time to dig out the warm clothes; things like sweat pants and shirts.  I’ve gone from shorts and bare feet to long pants and socks around the house.  It was a good run, but now ‘summer’ is over.  Oh, and I don’t think we’ll be hitting the pool in the near future.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

                          Peace,
                                    Danny

Secure

 Hi,

Based on the temperature of the last two mornings, and most of today, the cold season is creeping in on us.  This morning, while sitting on the porch, I was wearing a sweatshirt.  What?

The ‘Old School Friday’ song was “Sea Cruise” by Frankie Ford.  ‘Easy Monday’ should be easy.  “__ __, I hate __ __, got to work like a slave all day.  Here come Tuesdays, oh hard Tuesdays, I’m so tired, got no time to play.  Here come Wednesdays, I’m beat to my sox, my girl call, got to tell her that I’m out, ‘cause Thursday is a hard workin’ day and Friday I get my pay.”  Hint:  A color and a day of the week are involved.

A big topic of conversation this weekend was the ongoing demonstrations that are happening around Thailand.  What appeared in the beginning to be a student protest, is now embracing a cross-section of the population.  A very interesting article was written about the role of the motorcycle taxi drivers.  Historically, they have been a part of every movement, helping demonstrators move from place to place in safety, creating blockades to protect peaceful marchers, and alerting crowds when danger approached.  Many of the public transit stops have been closed by the government in order to stop the crowds, but the motorcycle taxis have taken up the call and move folks around the city ‘Like water’.  One gets the feeling that we are seeing history in the making.  This movement is not going away.  Numerous threats have not discouraged the throngs.  Meanwhile, in Chiang Rai, there was a demonstration at Mae Fahluang University, about 30 minutes north of town, but nothing in the streets.

Saturday I Zoomed to Moscow, Russia to hear a friend speak, and then went to a little town outside of Philadelphia to speak in the evening.  Lisa and Noom took JaiDee for his exercise.  JaiDee and Noom took off and ran around the track, returning to visit Lisa from time to time.  When we took JaiDee on Sunday, he saw a cat at the beginning of the walk and was very distracted and anxious.  We made it about half way and called it quits.  He was just unmanageable.  Tonight we walked around outside the house and he was an angel.  I think he likes it here.

Today’s photo was taken this evening just before Nitchanan left for her little cousin’s 3rd birthday party.

There appears to be a second wave of the virus happening in Europe and the Americas.  The same protocols that were suggested in the beginning still apply.  It’s a matter of public safety.  Weakness is not the issue, unless you catch it, and then the words won’t help.  Mask up, wash up, split up and shut up.  Time to get tough.

Have a Great Week.

                       Peace,
                                 Danny

Friday Funnies

 Hi,

Last night there was another light rain, and today was cloudy and dry.  Some parts of the area are getting rain and others aren’t.  The district east of Chiang Rai gets very little rain compared to the central part of town.  Weather.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” by Ella Fitzgerald.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x83ffKWldY  Time for some ‘Old School Friday’.  Some of you might recognize the style of the writing:  “Old man Rhythm is-a in my shoes, it’s no use sittin’ here singin’ the blues.  So be my guest, you got nothin’ to lose.  Won’t you let me take you on a __ __?  Hint:  There’s a nautical theme in the title.

This morning was like old times.  We went to Big C, and then went to Starbuck’s for coffee and treats.  We were going to go to Top’s Market and then into the mall after it opened, but we were feeling so relaxed, we decided to go home, after stopping by the Talat.  Walking towards the entrance to the market, I noticed a new place (to us) featuring chicken and rice.  This was a delicacy we enjoyed on our visit to Singapore a few years ago.  I filed it away and gave it no more thought.  Inside the market things were their usual Friday busy.  There is a shoe shop that has comfortable sandals and Lisa wanted to check out their latest.  She walked away with a pair of burgundy sandals.  On the way to the van we passed that place that I noticed earlier (chicken & rice).  Lisa spotted some hand-made earrings on a board by the door.  When we went inside to pay, the smell of the chicken and rice was overpowering and we decided to stay for lunch.  We called home to make sure Natcha hadn’t already cooked, and the coast was clear.  During our lunch a little 10 month old boy came out from the back.  He could stand, but not walk yet, and he was eyeing us.  We exchanged looks and smiles and as we were leaving he reached for me.  His mother said, in Thai, that he wanted to touch my hair.  Maybe next time (555).  The women running the shop are Ahka and the crafts they were selling were all hand sewn.  I imagine we’ll be back.

Friday nights at the walking place are usually less crowded than other nights.  Tonight was even less populated, which gave us hope for a seamless stroll with no distractions.  Well, as soon as JaiDee set foot on the path he was out of sorts.  He tried to pull away like he needed to get away from something.  There was one dog, the beagle, but he wasn’t near us.  We finally had to go back to the van, load him up and go home.  A few minutes on home turf and he was mellow again.  He and Lisa walked around the house for about 25 minutes and he was ready for bed.  Maybe we’re destined to walk on the new track.

Today’s photo is from way back in 2014.  It’s a bamboo bicycle that a friend of ours was involved with.  I don’t know if it ever went into production, but it was a great idea.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.   Time for the ‘Funnies’.    Please stay safe.

                          Peace,
                                    Danny

Dreams

Hi,

Rain came last night, and again in the late morning, and in the afternoon.  They were brief, medium strength showers that washed everything.  They foiled the trash burners.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune is from 1956.  You don’t have to be old to appreciate the clever writing, or the masterful singing:  “Lost my heart, but what of it?  He is cold, I agree, he can laugh but I love it, although the laugh's on me.  I’ll sing to him, each spring to him, and long for the day when I’ll cling to him.  __, __, __ __ am I.
Clue:  This tune covers all the feelings, thoughts, and emotions that happen when a love affair ends.

This morning we took JaiDee to Chivit Thamma Da.  When we got to the area where we usually sit, a voice called out.  It was Joakim, the co-owner, having breakfast, with his dog Nam Kok sitting with him.  He let Kok go and he and JaiDee had a mellow reunion.  I mentioned how busy the place was for a Thursday morning and he told us they had a party call ahead for a “cake breakfast for 40 people”.  None of us had ever heard of such a thing, but they seemed to be having a great time.

After Chivit we went to Browney’s for a giant bag of kibble to donate to ‘Chance’, the place where we found TongTong.  One of JaiDee’s friends brought a jar of treats to the check stand and would have given him the whole thing if Lisa hadn’t ended it.  She also brought a gift mug for us.

I didn’t get a chance to take a nap today.  Instead, I was first up for a massage.  Khun Jin was here at 1pm sharp and we began.  I may have dozed off for a bit, but I do remember that it was a good massage and I felt very relaxed afterward.  We’re going to do it again next week.

The big news in Thailand these days is centered around the student demonstrations in Bangkok.  Tens of thousands of mostly young people are taking to the streets, ignoring warnings from the police.  The crowds have been very well behaved, as far as we know.  There are some very serious issues at stake and they’re not backing down.  Reminds me of the 60’s.  We’ll be going to Bangkok on the 26th of this month for the opening of the exhibit Lisa is in and we’re hoping things will be calm in the streets by then.

Today’s photo is our property before The Big Brown House.  The dream.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                              Peace,
                                        Danny

Actions

 Hi,

We woke up to another beautiful day.  The mornings are cool, but soon give way to the daily heat.  The rest of the week should cool down to the mid-80’s.  Hmm.  Rain might happen overnight.

This week’s ‘Easy Monday’ song was “Here, There, and Everywhere” by The Beatles.  Our ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune is by a famous writing pair, as sung by the Queen of Jazz (my words):  “I’m wild again, beguiled again, a simpering, whimpering child again.  __, __, __ __ am I.  Couldn’t sleep, and wouldn’t sleep when love came and told me I shouldn’t sleep.  __, __, __ __ am I.  Hint:  Three words that begin with the letter ‘B’.

This morning we went to The Wanderer by ourselves.  Yes, we’ve been given permission by our keeper to take little unsupervised excursions.  The preparations to reopen the ‘big room’ are almost complete.  It has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic, in an effort to downsize.  This Saturday they will present a small concert to mark the occasion.  Just like ‘old’ times.

In fairly local news, authorities have increased their testing of truck drivers attempting to cross the border between Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand.  There have been cases discovered, so now the tracing begins.  The search for those who have been in contact with positive patients is like a manhunt, with some serious consequences on the line.  We grateful that they are being this vigilant about the whole thing.

Today’s photo was taken Monday night atop the Riverie Hotel.  This is the same walking track after the sunset and the lights came on.  That glowy image off in the distance is the giant statue of Quan Yin.

We had another session in the pool today and it just keeps getting better.  After some physical therapy by Lisa yesterday, I’m able to swim with no pain in my knee.  Coupled with the increasing stamina, I’ll be ready for the Olympics in 2040-something (555).  Tomorrow Khun Jin is coming to give us all an overdue massage.

It feels like a Wacky Wednesday.

                            Peace,
                                      Danny

Why

Hi,

Another weather day worthy of the tour brochure.  It was actually cool this morning.  Our lows are in the low 70’s.

Only a few readers responded to the ‘Easy Monday’ song.  It’s from 1966, from an album named for something that goes around.  “I want her everywhere, and if she’s beside me I know I need never care, but to love her is to need her everywhere, knowing that love is to share, each one believing that love never dies, watching her eyes and hoping I’m always there… I will be there.”  Clue:  Two of the three words in the title are in the lyrics.

Today was the anniversary of the death of Rama IX, one of the most beloved Kings in Thai history.  In his memory, there is a public holiday on October 13 every year.  Schools were closed as well as many businesses.

Last night we enjoyed an amazing view from The Peak restaurant, on the 10th floor of the Riverie hotel.  Today’s photo is the new walk/run/bike track that was recently completed.  This may become our new place to walk JaiDee.  We drove over there tonight, but there was no one there and we weren’t sure if it’s officially open yet.  I’d hate to drive over the access bridge and then have the gate close and lock us in for the night (555).  We’ll check it out during the day and see what’s happening.  The surface is uniform all the way around and that will be a plus.

Last week I mentioned that Nitchanan was practicing writing the alphabet in English and Thai.  Now she’s working on multiplication tables, reciting them in Thai at a rapid pace.  Natcha made a video of her and it’s quite something to see the determination on her face.

We got a notice from the U.S. State Department letting us know that there will be a demonstration tomorrow (Wednesday) in Bangkok.  It’s a long way from here, but it’s nice to know that they are concerned about the safety of citizens, just in case things get rowdy.  So far, the students have been very peaceful.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

                            Peace,
                                      Danny

Dignity

 Hi,

The Chiang Rai weather has been absolutely beautiful.  Our weekend had clear skies and moderate temperatures.  More please.

‘Old School Friday’ was “Hello It’s Me” by Todd Rundgren.  For ‘Easy Monday’ try this one:  “To lead a better life, I need my love to be here… Here, making each day of the year, changing my life with the wave of her hand, nobody can deny that there's something there.  There, running my hands through her hair.  Both of us thinking how good it can be, someone is speaking but she doesn’t know he's there.”  Hint:  By four lads from across the pond singing about an ever-present love.

This weekend was pretty mellow.  We had coffee on Saturday with our friend John.  We went shopping with JaiDee at Browney Pet World, did some swimming, and celebrated Cat’s birthday today.  Cat came over to the house driving her boyfriend Noom’s car.  She’s been studying driving at a school and now has her license.  How time flies.

Here we are at The Peak, high atop the Riverie Hotel near our house.  It was our first time there and we had lots of fun.

The morning play between JaiDee and TongTong is now a regular feature.  Today’s photo is titled ‘Mighty JaiDee’.

Have a Great Week.

                         Peace,
                                   Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

The temperature is slowly dropping, not cool yet, but not scorching hot.  Tonight was a starry night.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was “Satin Doll,” music by Duke Ellington, arranged by Billy Strayhorn, lyrics by Johnny Mercer.  One of the early, definitive vocals was by Ella Fitzgerald.  ‘Old School Friday’ is not so old, 1973:
“__, __ __, I haven’t seen you for a long, long time.  Maybe I think too much but something's wrong, there’s something here that doesn’t last too long.  Maybe I shouldn’t think of you as mine.  Seeing you, or seeing anything as much as I do you.  I take for granted that you’re always there, I take for granted that you just don’t care.  Sometimes I can’t help seeing all the way through.”  Hint:  The singer is reintroducing himself in the title.  Trying to rekindle a romance.

The morning was spent at The Big Brown House.  I ‘Zoomed’ over to Phoenix, Arizona to a meeting while Lisa Skyped over to Nevada.  You might say we were out and about, in a virtual manner of speaking.  During our breakfast, we could tell that JaiDee’s footing was much better while he played with TongTong.  Not as much slipping and sliding.

Today’s photo was taken on the way to The Wanderer.  We see this Mercedes almost every time we go for coffee.  To see a stylized sedan, with blacked out chrome and slight ‘drop’, makes my heart sing.  It’s almost gangster.

This afternoon we went to Overbrook Hospital and got our flu shots.  In the afternoon, the place is quite laid back.  Hardly anyone waiting to see a doctor, and very little waiting for services.  Our friend Nurse Pay gave us the injections and she is the most painless ‘injector’ I have ever encountered.  We always try to arrange it so she gives us the shots.

Across the street from the hospital is a tiny little shop that’s owned by our friend Pui.  We first met her years ago when she had a little stall in the Night Bazaar.  She makes jewelry from old antique beads, or things she finds in thrift shops.  We stopped by to do a little shopping.  She gave me a really cool braided bracelet and discounted Lisa’s basket of stuff.  It’s a fun place because it’s very crowded, so there’s something to see everywhere you look.

A swim before dinner and a walk after, and the day began to wind down.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.           Time for the ‘Funnies’.      It’s Formula 1 from The Nurburgring in Germany.

                             Peace,
                                       Danny

Beauty

 Hi,

There were clouds that began moving in early, but nothing that looked like rain.  We ended up with another nice day.

The ‘Jazzy Wednesday’ tune was originally written as an instrumental for a big band, then later the lyrics were written.  “Baby, shall we go out skippin?  Careful amigo, you’re flippin’.  Speaks Latin, that __ __.  She’s nobody’s fool so I’m playin’ it cool as can be.  I’ll give you a whirl but I ain’t for no girl catchin’ me.  Switcheroony…”  Clue: The band leader is not a King or a Prince, but he claims another royal title (555)  There are many notable vocalists who have sung this tune.  Take your pick.

This morning was special.  This was the day JaiDee had an appointment to get his feet ‘done’.  I know, they're really paws, but it’s more fun this way.  Anyway, he had an 11 o’clock with the groomer at Dr. View’s, so we took him to Chivit Thamma Da.  Before we even got our coffee, he had a selfie taken with a new friend.  This guy just rushed up and started talking about how he had to have his picture taken with JaiDee.

At Dr. View’s clinic it was business as usual.  It took three women to hold him down while the fourth trimmed the fur between his toes.

This afternoon we went to immigration for our 90 day check-in.  The place was empty, which is the way we like it.  We handed our passports to one of our friends behind the counter and about 10 minutes later it was all over.  From there, we went to Makro for dog related food items (555).  Some of the carts were large-sized and filled to the brim.  The place was very busy, but we got a good checker and escaped with our sanity.

During our travels around town, I sometimes notice when a business has changed hands and ‘motif’.  Today I saw a restaurant/coffee shop called “The Inbox”.  Yesterday it was a tiny coffee shop called “Pheromones”.  I’m sure there are more clever names out there just waiting for me to notice.

This morning I tried to capture the dogs playing in the living room.  It was a pretty hectic time, but I think you can see the ‘motion’ in the first pic.  In the second, it’s that look that says, “We were just playing.”

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

                      Peace,
                                Danny
