Friday Funnies

Hi,
It's about 7 a.m. Saturday morning and we're in Taipei on a stop. Couldn't resist the opportunity to get the message out without missing a full day. Actually, we totally missed Friday.
You guys were asleep at the wheel on the song. "If You Love Someone, Set Them Free" by Sting, by 'Song of the Blue Turtle' LP. Shame on you. The weekend song is so obvious that all you get is '1970', by a trio.
"All my bags are packed I'm ready to go I'm standing here Outside your door I hate to wake you up To say goodbye.."

Well, we're hungry and there's more airport to visit. There's a new bird exhibit, and they've remodeled the Orchid Lounge. See you on Monday.

Peace,
Danny

Cherish

Hi,
This is late, and it will be brief. We're in the last, final stages of our departure. We had a great birthday dinner with C-Bass and family last night. Instead of baking him a cake, I had to buy one and write on it with little icing tubes. Not the same, but done with love. After dinner, cake and gifts, I was drawn to August room by the funky sounds of George Clinton and company. August was playing 'Flashlight', with the bass turned up. Did you know that 'Muppets in Space' has a very funky soundtrack? Who knew?
Just got back from getting the van cleaned up. We'll take it to the Divas at noon. Then it's off to Kerrina for a final PT session. After that, the final bag packing and then a brief breather. We'll do dinner the the kids, and then off to return the rental and LAX, for hours of standing/sitting around.
Anna M. was the only one to respond to the song, so far. Brava! Here's a little more, with no clues, 'cause you should know. "If you need somebody, call my name. If you want someone, you can do the same...__ __ __ __, __ __ __"
I'm going to miss you all, but not really. We'll still keep meeting like this and it won't be long before December comes and you'll be wondering why I haven't left yet. (Ha) Don't forget, it's 14 hours ahead of LA time. Don't bother calling before 6am. Get it?
As we say in Thailand, Sawatdee Cup.

Peace,
Danny

Dreams

Hi,
Just two more days. The list is getting shorter, but things still need attention. Lots to tell you, so let's get started.
I was surprised that so many of you knew "I Will Survive", and knew it was by Gloria Gaynor. Anna M. sent me a complete bio. It appears that Ms. Gaynor is still enjoying an active career in the industry, performing, getting her songs placed on TV and even writing an autobiography. (the title is, guess)
So now it's time for a mid-week challenge. This one comes from across the pond by a prolific writer. From a verse:
"If you want to keep something precious, you got to lock it up and throw away the key. If you want to hold onto your possession, don't even think about me...." Hint: Don't forget we're following a bit of a theme this week.
We just got home from taking Norm and Irina to the airport (they're going to Idaho). I haven't seen 5am in quite a while. We went in there Camry Hybrid. I mention this for two reasons. We didn't take the Lexus because we delivered it to our friend Michael for storage and sale. He's going to help us, since it's time to go and it isn't sold. The other reason I mention the Camry, I got to drive it home. Very nice vehicle. A little freaky to get used to. I got into trying to drive in 'E' mode. When I got it back to the house, I thought the engine had died. I kept trying to restart it and then Lisa asked me if it wasn't just doing it's thing. Sure enough, it was in silent mode. I could really get into this. Oh well, maybe in the future.
We picked up a Chevy Cobalt at Alamo on our way back from LAX. That will be our car for the next two days. Lisa drove it home and said it wasn't bad. It certainly beats a Tuk-Tuk.
And now the the water report. Wild Rivers was an experience. We got there about 11, an hour after opening. The place was packed. There were people everywhere, sliding and jumping and screaming. We found a nice spot next to the Lazy River and used that as home base. Cruising around, we found Hurricane Harbor, with it's wave machine. These are small surges of water that eventually have the whole giant pool rippling. It was full of kid and teens. We wandered in with the boys. Not far from that was a giant pool that produced real waves. They had boogie boards you could use to ride them. There were kids in there with fins (regulars) and they were really cutting it up. Mostly boys, but there were also a few girls who knew their stuff. Not a beginners pool.
C-Bass and his friend Nate went off and slid down various thing and we hung out with Anna and Mr. August. We rode the River, which was fun. You get in a big tube (we had a double) and let the current just take you along. Of course, you have to contend with kids who are either racing, playing tag or just being kids. It goes around one big section of the park so we started and ended at the same spot. August found his 'thing' in a four lane slide where they sit on a rubber mat and go pretty fast and stop in a pool of water (like splash mountain without the car). He alternated between that and the hot-tub.
We're off to have breakfast with Kristin (we stayed at her condo) and her dad. The day will be busy, but the eye is on the goal. Oh yeah, if you have Skype or iChat, send me you screen name. My Skype name is 'merakthai' (without the quotes) My iChat is my email address. See you on the internet.
Have a Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Talents

Hi,
Well, a wet-letter day is upon us. Today we go to the water park in Irvine. We've never been to a water park. I've seen footage of the various slides and stuff, and frankly, it has the same appeal as a roller-coaster. That's not the point though. This is part of the C-Bass Birthday Celebration. I will go, I will get wet, and I will play on the baby slide (if they let me). He's having a hard enough time with this separation anxiety. If it's wet he wants, it's wet he'll get.
Yesterday I had my second visit in as many weeks to Cousin Joel's studio. This time I got an intensive tutoring from his technical assistant James. James is what I call 'scary smart'. He knows how to fly around through Logic (the music program I'll be alone with in LOS) like it's the back of his hand. It was all I could do to stay on the edge of my chair and focus with all my might. I must say, he's a very patient teacher. He made sure I could do everything he taught me. Now I not only know how to access the hundreds of new sounds that Joel gave me, I know what to do with them in the program. Their generosity overwhelms me with gratitude. Big thanks to both of you.
Speaking of music, I was surprised to get so much mail on the first day of the song. This should help solve it:
"...To break me with goodbye you'd think I'd crumble, you'd think I'd lay down and die. Oh no, not I __ __ __..." Hints:
It's from 1979 by a disco diva, initials GG, and you really don't need more help.
With three days left on the continent, our dance cards are on the verge of being overbooked. There just isn't enough time to do lunch and dinner with everybody. That fills the heart and makes me realize that my life is full. When you have an abundance of true friends, you've got it all. Every time we have a need, or a challenge, it's met with solutions from friends. Amazing. All the little things that could be big things are being dealt with, and not driving us crazy.
Last night we started doing the serious sorting in preparation for the real packing. We're able to leave behind many things that we really don't need this first time around. A little corner of Norm's attic will be home to our stuff. I think I will be able to surrender enough to have manageable bags. I keep telling myself, 'You get to go shopping when you get to LOS'. Now isn't that just too bad? (Ha)
Oh, one more thing. Tomorrow is the target day to deliver the van to it's new owners. The Cake Divas are getting my beloved vehicle. I love it when stuff goes to friends. Leigh and Joan are dear friends of ours and passing 'baby' to them seems like the right thing to do. And it will smell sooo good inside.
Have a Terrific Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Nothing

Hi,
I hope you had a refreshing weekend. Ours was busy, of course. Before I get into that, we have a song to discuss. It was "I'll Be Seeing You", as performed by numerous artist. It was written by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal and published in 1938. Became a major morale song during the war, for obvious reasons. A real heart-tugger. I'm impressed that so many of you know the song, and saw the connection.
"At First I was afraid, I was petrified. Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side..." Clue: This is a '79 disco tune going out to all the drama queens. This is from the intro, a non-rhythmic, mellow-dramatic, over the top reading. Then comes the pounding song. Put on you bellbottoms and remember.
Saturday afternoon, we got a major sendoff from about 150 close friends. Wow. It's hard to find the words to describe the feelings that ensued. My good friend Lee was the initial instigator of the event. Apparently it took on a life of it's own, and drove him a little crazy in the process. Big thanks, much gratitude and love to all 'my boys' for all that they did. We were overwhelmed with all the sentiments, gifts, and just the presence of so many real friends. This is the part that makes it hard to leave. Why would anybody want to leave all that we have? There's a big world out there, and there's no reason one can't have the love of many friends and the excitement of exploration in the same lifetime. Hmm, did I say that?
That evening we went over to hang out with 'The Family'. Jeff, Anna and August came to the party, but C-Bass didn't make it. First he didn't want to come, and after his folks had left, he changed his mind but it was too late. August showed me some kind of theater set he had put together in the family room. There were many lights, his sound system and a big cloth over the TV screen. I thought we were going to see a show. Later, he announced (after a timer countdown) that it was show time. We had to line up in the hall, pull tickets (all #26) from a bag that he made, hand him the ticket and then go in and sit in a numbered seat. Once we were all seated, he said: 'Who's first?'. What? He then replied: 'Who's going to dance first?'. We had been taken hostage in an August Reality Show. We were like deer caught in the headlights. What do we do now? Anna got up and danced and this pleased the maestro. Then it fell apart from there. No one really wanted to go through this process for the time it was going to take. August stuck his lip out for a minute, but got over it pretty quick.
Yesterday we picked up mom and went back out to Bangkok Blue. We needed to have one last visit, discuss a few more things with our 'connection'. Getting first hand info, pronunciation tips, coordinating schedules is very important work that can only be done efficiently over a dinner of Thai cuisine. (Ha) I also got my very first computer game. Ming gave me a special version of a Formula One game. I have to do some work to load it, but once I do, we'll see if I can stay out of the gravel. While we were there, we were surprised by a visit from Robin and Char, who I mentioned back in January. They traveled to LOS, but got there during the fires and didn't have such a good time. When we explained the cause of the smog, they've decided to try and go back again. Yes, there is clean air in Chiang Rai, most of the year.
That's enough babbling for a Monday morning. Another busy day ahead. Have a Wonderfilled Week.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,
Well, memories are intact. As my good friend Michael put it: 'Lighters are held high and everyone is swaying', and we're singing along to "We Are The World". Quincy Jones produced the all-star cast of singers and he actually had a sign above the entrance to the studio saying 'Leave your ego at the door.'
For the weekend, it's time to start getting sentimental. "__ __ __ __ in all the old familiar places, that this heart of mine embraces all day through..." Hint: It's an old one that gained popularity during WWII and proves that sometimes good things happen as a result of war (not many). Rather oblique, I know.
There were two thing I was going to tell you about. I remembered both of them. (amazing) First, the visit to the new school for C-Bass. It's a Charter school that's K-8 and modeled after a school he attended for pre-school. It's based on the idea that a school should be a democratic society where students get to have a say in what happens during their day and how things are done. Each class has a meeting every morning to decide what they're going to do. Text books are used as references and there is very little homework. Older students mentor younger ones and can visit their classes. It's quite an interesting concept and it's too bad it doesn't go past the eighth grade.
The other thing was the 'sign up adventure' with Skype. When you join, you're ask to chose a screen name. Of course I picked Gratidude as my first choice. That was rejected. We found a window that lets you search the world for matches and we found another one. Bummer. Then I figured there couldn't be another Thaifunk. Wrong again. Oh, the pain. To find out you're not as unique as you thought. At least the guy who's Thaifunk is Thai. I had to go deep to trick the masses. So, my Skype name is 'merakthai'. Actually, it's three words: Me Rak Thai, which means Me Love Thai. Clever huh? So, Skype me sometime. The only thing about all that is that one must be on-line and 'available'. Guess you'll just have to check.
This would have been out earlier, but we just got back from LAX and breakfast. We took Norm and Irena to stand in a long line at South West, and then stopped to feed. (Ha) On our ride to the airport, the subject of packing and excess came up. Norm told us we could keep things in his empty attic if we need to. We just discovered the door in the ceiling that's connected to a ladder. Very interesting. We'll certainly be climbing those stairs.
Hey, its Friday and that means it's time for the 'Funnies'. Have a Great WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

LITTLE OLD LADY DRIVER
Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, an AZ

himself "This driver is just as dangerous as a speed er!" So he turns on
his lights and pulls the driver over.

Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies -- two in
the front seat and three in the back -- wide eyed and white as ghosts. The
driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I
was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"

"Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know
that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other
drivers."

"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit
exactly...seventeen miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly.

The AZ State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her
that "17" was the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed,
the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error.

"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask...is everyone in this car
OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep
this whole time," the officer asks.

"Oh, they'll be alright in a minute, officer. We just got off highway101."

Love

Hi,
This will be short today. The connection is down, where we're staying. I'll have to write this, then go over to The Boys and send it, then dash off to SM for a session with Kerrina the Krusher. From there we go out west to Cousin Joel's, for a massive download of instrument samples and some Logic tips from his staff. Whew, getting tired yet?
Then it's back to the Westside where we both have dinners with friends. Not much time for hanging around waiting for the pipeline to connect. I suspect this sort of thing will happen in LOS from time to time. When it does, we can usually count on one of the numerous 'cafes' to have a stronger 'business' connection. (they seem to get a priority)
So many of you got the song. That's cool. If you didn't quite know it from yesterday's line, this should clench it:
"__ __ __ __, we are the children...." No more clues.
Tomorrow I'll have to tell you about our visit to C-Bass' new school. There was something else I was to mention, but it has flown away for the moment. (don't laugh, it will happen to you too)
Have a Thriller Thursday!

Peace,
Danny

Peace

Hi,
Yesterday turned out to be quite a day. We got a call on the car and the phone. My Treo was supposed to be done, as in contract over, on the 20th, but I was still getting calls yesterday. So, I tried to go on line to figure things out, but that never works. I took a deep breath and called the Sprint Torture Line. If you've never experienced it, don't. They have this really cheery voiced person who lives in there and she's just too perky. Especially when you called because you're having a problem with their stuff. Ugh. Kerrina warned me about this when I first got the phone. Oh well. I finally got a human, who explained that I had to cancel the account. That meant I had to talk to another human, and the wait might be 5 to 10 minutes. After 12 minutes of really bad Wave music, I found out that it expires on the 26th. That's cool with me, I've been going through touch-screen withdrawal and it's not pretty.
We showed the car last evening. The wife showed up first, at the park, and we talked about the car. Then her husband arrived. Mr. 'Yang' energy. Trying to act like 'I'll take over now because I know what I'm doing'. On the test drive, he was stomping on the gas and brakes and we finally had to tell him to stop. 'Do that when it's your car.' What a jerk. Anyway, it left us with that bad feeling you get after a confrontation. You kind of vibrate in the wrong frequency. Most uncomfortable. We watched the end of a movie, ate popcorn and it finally got better.
The August Chronicles: I thought I was done with these chapters, but we went by to see the family before the car thing. August asked me if I'd seen his hospital. Of course, I hadn't. In a low tone, he let me know that I had to be sick. His recent visit to the emergency sparked a whole new level of playing doctor. I got a shot (it was going to be minor surgery but I got a reprieve) and a cast on my leg. He had a little plastic container with all his bandages, hypos and such, just like the nurses have when they come to see you. He explained what was going on and what was going to happen, like a good seven y/o doctor should. At one point he mentioned something about blood and how it was really blue inside of us and that sparked a whole debate that led to Jeff having C-Bass look it up. We discovered that blood is two different colors inside the body. You can count on me to not give details. You're welcome.
Oh, so you didn't know the song. Yes you did. It was "Yes, I'm Ready", by Barbara Mason, from 1965. Try this one:
"There comes a time when we need a certain call, when the world must come together as one..." Hint: It's ten years later and a whole bunch of people showed up and were told to leave their egos at the door.
Gotta go. There's a list waiting for me. Have a Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Light

Hi,
I'm a little late today. (sorry about posting so late to the blog yesterday) I had to take C-Bass to Sports Camp this morning. He was in a great mood. Camp in the morning is like organized chaos. It brought back memories, watching the counselors trying to get them sorted out and deciding where to put them. Ahh, summer.
I can't believe it's less than two weeks until we leave. We posted the Lexus and my Treo and it brought things to a new level of reality. Just in case you're curious/interested, here are the links:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/car/401587275.html for the Lexus IS 300

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/ele/402094515.html for the Treo 650 (smart phone)

So, are you telling me that Linda and Lisa are the only ones who know this song? Surely you remember:
"I don't even know how to hold your hand, just to make you understand. But __ __ to learn (to learn)
__ __ __ to learn (to learn)...." Hint: It was 1965, slow R&B ballad about a young woman deciding to take chance on love.
Sunday we went out to Bangkok Blue with my mom. In the course of all the conversations about LOS, we discovered that most vitamins are available. That's a big relief because we were trying to figure out how we could take enough to last and whether they could be mailed to us. Another problem solved. One challenge that we haven't decided on is how to deal with the Customs agent, who informed us that our original passports will be necessary in order to release our container when it arrives. We're not too keen on sending our passports through the mail, to Bangkok. They've assured us that's they've been doing it for eight years without any problems. Hmm, make numerous copies of all the pages and cross our fingers, or fly to Bangkok for the release. We'll see.
I still have some decisions to make as far as what I'm leaving behind. Notice I didn't say 'taking'. I could take it all, and not be able to lift the bags. Attachment is still there, and still a form of suffering. Hmm.
Last night we set up Skype accounts. If you have Skype, write me and let me know. Computer to computer communication is free. We could have video visits from across the pond. Just don't forget to comb your hair. (Ha)
Have a HOT Tuesday and don't forget to drink water and blah, blah, blah.

Peace,
Danny

Beauty

Hi,
Is this just another Monday? I think not. It's the next to the last Monday for us on this continent. Of course, all this count-down business loses some of it's impact when you realize that we'll be back for a visit in December. Never the less, we leave in a week and a half.
Speaking of leaving, my Treo account has left the building. I will miss the touch screen, the big numbers, the easy email, and my Frou Frou ringtone ('Let Go'). Hmm, still not a reason to stay. So, if you or someone you know, is in the market for a Sprint Treo 650, drop me a line. (there has to be a new term to replace 'drop me a line')
This morning I have the news playing behind my email window. As high tech as it is, I can't listen to the news and do this at the same time.
Oh, I know, you want to know what the weekend song was. Ok, it was "Don't Let Go", originally recorded by Roy Hamilton in the late '50s. The cover artist I made reference to was Issac Hayes. Oh well. I suppose it's time for an easily recognizable tune, so you can start the week with a big win. (Ha)
I don't even know how to love you, just the way you want me to, But __ __....." Clues: this song is from my favorite year, by a female singer with a shy voice.
We put the Lexus on the market this weekend. Got it detailed yesterday so it's sparkles. Now the trick will be keeping it clean until you come to get it. I just know you're wanting an IS300 with low miles. This little car is a beast. Big fun to drive around town and on the highway. (sneaky, huh?)
There's a bunch more to tell you about the weekend, but it's time to go. Late starts always cut things short. (remember that) Have a Marvelous Monday.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,
Well, we're back in town. Had a rather uneventful day in SJ. Spent more time than we wanted in the airport, but there wasn't really enough time to go exploring. I think it's time for airports to provide free WiFi. They do it in other countries. In SJ it costs anywhere from $6.95 to $9.95 to get on line. Why would I pay $10 for a 'day pass' when I'm only going to be there for a few hours. Do I see some connection between checking in two hours early and concessions. Hmm.
The song some of you knew was "The Way You Look Tonight", written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields. Notable recordings are by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and many others. The group I first heard the song from was The Jaguars, in 1956. There are samples of the track on various sites. Just Google them and listen to a clip. Better yet, buy the tune and learn to love it the way I do. For the weekend, here's another oldie. Have fun with it:
"Oo-ee, mmm this feelin' is killin' me. Aaaw shucks, I wouldn't stop for a million bucks (I love you so).
Just hold me tight and __ __ __ " This one goes way back, but had a remake in '80 by a singer/actor/cartoon character. Hmm. You miss this one, you get the shaft. Bonus points for original artist.
There was major drama yesterday evening. We were just leaving The Kids when we heard a thud and then a shriek. August had fallen and cut his lip against the wall. Jeff and Lisa took him to St. John's and I followed. He was hysterical at first, but calmed down on the way to the hospital. He and Jeff got home about 11 and he's going to be alright. As he was going to bed, he ask us to have 'you and me dreams, but without the stitches. Oh, on the way to the hospital, he was heard saying, "Life is hard". Hmm.
It's time for the 'Funnies'. Have a Great Weekend. Oh yeah, Sunday is our 37th anniversary. Whoopee.

Peace,
Danny

Hi,
You're probably noticing that these messages are coming later in the day. That's because we're on a mini-vacation and we get up when we get up. Then we go have a tacky breakfast and then I write. Today we went to IHOP and it was slow and slower. Yesterday we went to Denny's. I think it was the lesser of two evils. Oh well, it's not forever.
My hat's off (don't wear a hat) to all of you who knew "He's So Fine", by the Chiffons, from 1963. You may recall, the song was the focus of a lawsuit, claiming that George Harrison had 'stolen' the melody for his song, "My Sweet Lord". The final ruling was, George didn't intentionally copy the melody. As one fan put it, 'we got two great songs'.
"Some day, when I'm awfully low, when the world is cold, I will feel the glow just thinking of you and __ __ __ __ __" Clue: Very old, many recordings, a standard. Bonus points for the R&B group that recorded it back in the day.
We spent yesterday with Joe. We went to the Apple store to get a camera for his iMac. They were out, so we went back for more research. Tried many things, got very frustrated, but haven't given up. Don't you love it when a 'tech' tells you, 'just go to blah blah, and click on the zonk and you'll be all set'. Never happens that way. We did have a great day and evening, so, machines aside, we're happy. We're going back today for a final attempt.
This evening we're going north to Oakland, for dinner with the Cousins. I'm sure I'll have much to tell after that.
Since my mind is stuck on solving our latest technical difficulty, I'm going to wish you a Wacky Wednesday and sign off.

Peace,
Danny

Dreams

Hi,
Tuesday morning in San Jose. We're at a Radisson, in what appears to be a business district near the airport. We flew up in tiny little jet. I say tiny because it had two seats on the right and one on the left, two smallish jet engines on the tail and it looked like a rocket. Anyway, it got us here.
"__ __ __, wish he were mine, that handsome boy over there, the one with the wavy hair..." I got mail from unlikely places on this one. Nice work. Hope these lyrics fill in the blanks for the rest of you. Oh, and you didn't have to be born to know this one either. Clue: Group in named after a fabric (hey, it was all about texture)
I have to go back to Sunday night. I promised to tell you about the Magic Castle. So, we pulled up to the entrance, met the valet and strolled inside, like we belonged there. Our friend Cheryl met us inside, but had to run off to handle some business. Her brother, if you remember, was he main act in the show room and it was his last night. When she came to get us, we walked over to a book case. She told me to say the magic words. I blew it, but she coached me and after saying 'Open Sesame', the wall opened and we walked into the club. Very cool. We had a very nice dinner and then went down to wait for the show. We noticed a large man in a brown suit talking to several guest before the show. He was asking them questions and giving them small brown envelopes. Hmm. Once the show started, we discovered he was like our host and well as a trickster. He told us he knew what we were thinking. (I hope not) During the course of the evening, he guessed the number a woman was thinking, the name of another's first kiss, and the serial number on a dollar bill. The first display was amazing. The number was 45. While he was messing with the subject and the audience, he was writing on a big piece of paper. We couldn't see what he was doing. Then he as her for the number. Then he showed us his work. It was a grid with 4 numbers across and down. At first it looked like he had missed the number. Then he started adding up the numbers in the first column. The answer was 45. Then he added another column and it was 45. He went faster and faster and it always came up 45. Diagonally, 45. We sat there baffled and amazed.
Gotta move on to the finale, the main attraction, the start of the show. Dan Berch came out and never said a word. It was 'old-school' razzle dazzle magic time. Scarves appeard then vanished, string was set on fire and turned into a dove. I'll summarize: Fire tuned into doves, doves disappeared, doves turned into a poodle. What? You had to be there.
We're off to Palo Alto for a day with Joe. We're going to lunch, then to some art exhibits and later, out to dinner. It's going to be a full day.
Enjoy your Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Worry

Hi,
Well, I'm back from a wild and crazy weekend. I looks like Linda and Reggie were the only ones to know the song. It was "Hungry Like A Wolf", by Duran Duran. Guess it wasn't that obscure after all. We'd better start the week with something more familiar. I'm going to give you some background parts and you name the song (we used to have big fun with this). "Doo lang doo lang, doo lang..." Hint: Girl group, about a boy.
So, about the weekend. We got invited to the Magic Castle for Sunday evening, which meant that Saturday was an excuse to go shopping. They have a very strict dress code at the Castle and we didn't have suit or dress. (by that I mean that I didn't have a suit and Lisa didn't have a dress) Ha! Anyway, We found what we needed and had a pretty good time doing it. Sunday morning I went to a Men's breakfast with about 350 close friends, left there, picked up Lisa and we went to the wedding of Vivian and Raul. Beautiful affair, lovely bride, handsome groom and an audience that really cleaned up nice. From there we were off the the Magic Castle. I promise to tell you about that tomorrow.
Today we fly to San Jose for a week of visiting with Lisa's dad Joe, his wife Eva in Palo Alto. We'll also spend an evening with the Bay area cousins (Eunice, James and Trudye) Oh, and we're going to see an old friend from the institute days that's been my Apple connection for years. We'll be back Thursday afternoon, but I'll be 'in touch'.
Right now it's time to try and pack, which means sharing one bag. (Ha) This will really be interesting, as I'm the champion of overpacking. This will require visualizing each day, and remembering that I don't change three times here, so why would I there. Hmm, there's a bit of logic in that. Maybe I've healed myself. We'll know in a couple of days.
I leave you with a quote from the past, that's always been a profound favorite. Have a Magnificent Monday.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies (not really)

Hi,
A little late this morning. Had a late night after a tiring day. All that to say that sometimes one must sleep in. Oh, you had to get up? Your time will come. (Ha)
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. That was the multifaceted piece that worked my brain for two days. How about you?
Let's try this for the weekend: "In touch with the ground, I'm on the hunt I'm after you. Smell like I sound, I'm lost in a crowd And I'm __ __ __ __ " Clue: they had several major world wide hits. Their name was redundant, song has an animal vibe (hmm). Did I just give it away? I don't think so.
So, Lisa spent most of the day at the beach with Anna and the boys, plus several other kids. Sounds like they had a great time. I spent most of the day and evening in a chair, getting my hair twisted by a woman from Senegal. Her eight month old daughter, Astu was in a walker next to me and we became best buds. It was a interesting day, as an observer of culture. Two artists spoke a derivation of French as their native language and it drove the owner nuts when they'd go on long conversations. I just sat and smiled, noting the tone of paranoia that filled a morning conversation about immigration, language, and 'rights'. It seems that every sub-culture is fighting for perceived survival, rather than trying to collectively work towards peaceful coexistence. The conclusion was, that acceptance understand and,
compassion were the key elements needed to change it all. Duh. Isn't it interesting, that within each culture, these things are taught, but they don't seem to get applied when dealing with 'others'. Ok, I'm done.
It's time for the 'Funnies', brought to us today by Cousin Trudye from the Bay Area. I think this is the first time I've sent cartoons. Hope you get them. Have a Wild and Wonderful WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

Sorry, the cartoons won't copy into the blogspot format. Not to worry, they were just about getting old, and since you're not that old, they wouldn't have been funny anyway. (Ha)

Kindness...

Hi,
Judging from the mail I got yesterday, we were all singing in our heads, though probably not the same section at the same time. Lots of choices. If it didn't come to you, maybe this chapter will ring a bell. Have a good time with it.
"I see a little silhouetto of a man Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning - very very frightening me Gallileo, Gallileo...." This one is interesting because the title is not a lyric in the song. To my thinking (uh,oh) this is one of the most unusual hit songs in popular music, especially considering the times. What else to say except that there's an air of royalty in the group's name.
We got our visas yesterday. We are official, certified, stamped, and paid in full. As Lisa put it, we really pose no threat. What was interesting about the whole process is that we were not treated as suspects or threats at any time. This, of course, is contrary to how 'some' countries handle immigration. Nuff said.
We went downtown to pick up a few gifts (not for us) and have lunch. Such restraint and composure. We saw, but didn't buy. Wait, we went to the mall and I bought socks, but that was planned. The impulse thing is pretty much under control. Only because we're still cutting back on our bags. Just wait 'til we get to Chiang Rai.
I can't believe how calm I've been without a T.V. It's as though a wave of acceptance and serenity washed over me and dulled me out. Maybe it's the confidence in reruns and DVD collections that's allowing me to stay calm. What ever, I'm sure everyone around me is happy.
Well, I'm off on a 'hairy' adventure (get it?). Next time you see me, I won't look like the me you saw the last time you saw me. (Ha)
Today's quote was sent to me by Blue. It was sent to him by a fan of Seawind (a group we've loved for years. History later).
Have a Thursday on the house.

Peace,
Danny

Trail

Hi,

The ghost is back. I'm talking about the paragraph space. Oh well, doesn't really matter. What matters is, the thing still works.

Aren't you proud of yourself for knowing the song (even though you didn't write to tell me)?? I'm happy for you. The song title was "Fly Like An Eagle", by The Steve Miller Band, 1976. Lane writes: An earlier 1973 version of the song features a more bluesy and less funk-inspired rhythm, and guitar taking the synthesizer parts (albeit with similar delay effects). The lyrics are slightly different, indicating that the place the eagle wants to fly away from is a Native American reservation.

"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality..." Hint: We've traveled with them before. Longtime readers should remember this memorable operetta. If there's weak response, the clues may get deeper. Have fun, sing it all day, out loud. (scare people)

Yesterday we did the deed. Arrived at the Thai Consulate with all of our stuff, fairly organized and they loved it. Papers were shuffled and collated and we were sent to window #2. There was some partial scrutiny, pages were stamped and 'O-A' writen at the top. That signifies Retirement Visa. Then we were sent to window #4 where we paid our money. Everyone kept saying come back tomorrow after 10:30 to pick up your visa. What? Yea! Whoopie! Still waiting until we have paper in hand before we really cut loose. (shhh, I'm secretly dancing inside)

The August Chronicles: If you recall, last week I thought it might be the end of the Chronicles, since our weekly visits might have to end. Well, I misspoke. It turns out, he's never seen Norm's house. He knows Norm, and his crews because they've done major work for Jeff and Anna. That's another story. When I picked him up and told him where we were going, his eyes lit up. They were already pretty bright from telling me all about crickets. Everybody at Science Camp went home with a 'cricket condo', and lots of info. Did you know that only boy crickets make noise at night? You should have heard us trying to explain why the girls don't make noise. Anyway, when we pulled up in front of the house, sound of amazement came from the back seat. Things like 'That's the biggest house I've ever seen' and 'That's a great house'. August knew, from the things Norm had put in his (August's) house, that this one should have some tricks. He was quite impressed with the bathroom 'Chamber' and we let him turn on the lights and the radio with the remote. Another big hit was the massage chair. Lots of buttons to push. We got him to describe what each function was doing. He did a good job, with verbal and hand gestures.

We had a light dinner and did more exploring. August loved the washing machine, with so many options and things to push and control. He doesn't just look at buttons. He creates a result in his mind. By that, I mean, he imagines what's happening when an action is taken. His logic is very accurate. Which brings us to another part of the adventure. When we got to his house, he had to show me something. (he always has to show me something) He picked up a box and set it on the floor. He then announced that he had done this all by himself, with no help. The 'This' he spoke of was the complete disassembly of his music player/radio. He had permission to do this, by the way. I ask him what he was going to do with it and he calmly told me it was going in the trash. But he was saving the speakers. My kinda guy. He then proceeded to connect one of the speakers to another CD player and tape it to the back. It worked and joy filled the house.

I've added the blogspot address to the signature, so you don't have to worry about losing it. Just bookmark it and you can always find me. I'll be adding some new things when we get to LOS.

As we approach our exit, many things are changing. One of those is my head. Not the inside (constantly changing) but the outside. The natural has grown to the point where it's hard to keep it neat (and I'm not in a cutting mood). Bumping into things, the thought of traveling with 'bed-head', it's just to overwhelming. So, tomorrow it's all getting twisted up and I'll be sporting a new look, similar to an old look. I've wanted to do this for some time, and was partially inspired by 'heads' I saw on our last visit. Plus, less hair product to pack, I think.

Enough. I'm taking C-Bass to Sports Camp this morning. Right now I need to spend a few minutes shedding some excess from my luggage. Oh, the pain.

Have a Wacky Wednesday!

Peace,

Danny

Discover

Hi,
Today, I'll be brief. (crowd roars with approval) We spent most of yesterday preparing for today. There was the bank account statement, police clearance, notary, photos, cashier checks and a zillion copies of everything. Then it had to be assembled. Now we're ready and today is the day. It's supposed to take about two days to get the visa, but once the materials are accepted, it's pretty much a done deal. (he said with hope)
I was impressed that so many of you responded to the 'easy' song. If you didn't quite figure it out, remember this:
"Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin', Into the future" Now, do you really need more clues?
It just occurred to me that we really don't have a way to spend our evenings with The Boys. Although bringing August to Norm's would be like a trip to 'plug in world' for him. All the gadgets and innovations would blow his little mind. Tempting, but not going to happen. Hmm, so many things are ending.
Well, time to go put on my "visa gettin'" face. Today's quote is one we've seen before, but even more appropriate these days.

Peace,
Danny

Let Go

Hi,
This is the first day of Lisa's 'Retirement Life" and it seems to be growing on her. Friday she had to turn in all the physical attachments to her job: The Blackberry that was a constant source of communication and sometimes aggravation, the parking card and the keys. It was an interesting weekend just floating free, working on letting go.
The easy weekend song was "Help" by The Beatles. Where was my mail. You were all supposed to write me 'cause you knew the answer. Please tell me your dog ate your homework, or that your connection went down. (I'm trying to prime you for writing me in LOS)
Today's song may be easy for some. As usual, the title and the original artist. I heard a great cover, but that doesn't count.
"Feed the babies, Who don't have enough to eat, Shoe the children, Without shoes on their feet, House the people
Livin' in the street. Oh, Oh There's a solution. I wanna __ __ __ __..." Hint: Late 70s from a band with many hits. about a desire to do what man has always wanted to do.
Saturday we made the big, basic move from the condo to the house. Norm and Irena are very gracious hosts and have made us feel more than at home. Saturday I tried the shower chamber. It took a while to figure out all the controls and I got squirted with cold water from one of the side jets. Not a nice surprise. I finally got hot water from a shower wand and settled for that. I still want to go in and try all the tricks. Lisa figured out how to run a bath and turn on the mood lights and bubbles. We could get real comfortable here.
Saturday evening we were taken to dinner by some good friends from Lisa's former work. (likin' the way that sounds) We had a lovely time. Later I'll post a link that will blow your mind.
Sunday we did more follow-up packing and cleaning out at the condo, and then Jeff, Anna and The Boys came over for a swim. Another fun day in the sun. We capped off the day watching "Catch & Release" with our hosts on their giant HD TV with the surround and all. Now I'm officially spoiled.
We off to deal with the business of departure. This will be exciting, gratifying work for sure. Have a Momentous Monday.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,
Big news to tell you today. We will not have to spend our remaining days at the Brazilian motel. The plan was to leave the condo next Wednesday. Without taking you on a long trip, the contractor who's doing our little room at Jeff and Anna's heard about our situation and has offered us a room at his house. More about this in a minute.
I know you're frantic to know the song. It was "Blinded By The Light", as made famous by Manfred Mann and His Earth Band. It was written by Bruce Springsteen and some of you knew it from him. The elusive line was a reference to a 1932 Ford hotrod (deuce is a slang term for the number 2 often used in card games). So now you know.
Bonus points go to Lane and Frank for knowing the reference to 'Tryin' to make it real....' Lane sent this info:Gene McDaniel (the songs author) had been an established pop star, hitting in 1961 with ‘A Hundred Pounds of Clay’ and then again in 1962 with original version of ‘The Point of No Return’ (later redone by Georgie Fame). The assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 spurred McDaniels to pack his bags and leave the US for Scandinavia. It also inspired him to pen ‘Compared to What’. He passed the song on to his pal Les McCann (with whom he had worked prior to signing with Liberty) and the rest - as they say ? is history. McCann (along with Eddie Harris) laid down a smoking (some would say definitive) version of ‘Compared to What’ at the 1968 Montreux Jazz Festival which was released the following year on the landmark LP “Swiss Movement”.
The easy one I promised you, might be too easy, but everybody needs to feel like a winner at some point. From '65:
"__ me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being 'round __ me get my feet back on the ground..."
Oh, way too easy. I can hear the complaints from the usual suspects. I'm expecting mail from all of you with the answer. Don't let me down.
On Friday's I usually tell you something about our Thursday evening with C-Bass. He didn't come over yesterday. Instead, I'm taking him to see The Simpsons Movie. Pray for me.
So, Norm (the contractor) has built his 'dream house' and we get to stay there. We got the tour last night. The house itself, is very impressive. Big rooms, high ceilings and beautiful wood. What blew our minds was 'our' bathroom. Not only is there lots of floor space, there is a star of the show. The shower enclosure is about eight feet wide (I'll have to measure) and has more features than our Lexus. There are about 12 jets (must count) that spray from every direction, piped in music, mood lights, steam, foot massage, and a jacuzzi tub that fills from a waterfall. Oh my. We may never leave that room. We can even plug our iPod into the system and listen to our choice of music.
Ok, it's time for the 'Funnies'. We continue with part 2 of the ads. Have a Wonderfilled WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

Attitude

Hi,
What's this? Overcast skies? Cooler day maybe? Just what I need for running around town. And isn't it silly of me to trip on cooler days when I'm about to jump into a furnace? Yes. Yesterday's high will be the average low in Chiang Rai. Hmm, is this a cold snap?
I promise to give you an easy song for the weekend, even though Lane said this one was easy and Frank got it fast. What happened to the rest of you? I know, it's an odd one but you can do it. Here's the hook and that 'phrase':
"__ __ __ __ Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night" (x3) Clue: Now that you know what that line is, the song should be looping in your head. It was written by the Boss and the reference is to a '32 Ford hot-rod. Oh, but he wasn't the artist. Initials M.M. Good luck.
The August Chronicles, part 2: During our strolling adventure through the grounds, we took him to pool number one, which he hadn't seen yet. He decided, like last week, to lead us back. Only thing was, we'd gone farther with more turns. He started a little game with himself. At every fork in the path, he'd consider both directions, knowing that some led to garages and others to condos. We all got a good laugh from that and he finally got us 'home'.
Yesterday August pulled out his Leggo Phone, ask his mom where his numbers were, and began making calls. I got one at about 11:30 while I was getting dressed after a session with Franco. I needed adjusting after all the moving. It was perfect timing, that he called when he did. A few minutes earlier and I couldn't have taken the call.
Tomorrow is Lisa's last day of work! The end of an era is upon us. It's been a great career, which she embraced with much enthusiasm, and now she must go to detox. (Ha) We'll be watching for the physical signs: reaching for the Blackberry to check emails, thinking of things to do that are not her job, dialing numbers, etc. I'm making light of it, but after 30 years, there's bound to be a part of one that tries to hang on. Hmm. Transitions.
Speaking of transitions, 28 days and counting, to the biggest transition we've faced in a long time. I thought buying the house and moving in was major (it was) but now the perspective changes and relativity has importance. Life is always changing. How it seems or feels is usually based on what it's changing from. Or, to quote a famous hook: 'Tryin' to make it real, compared to what..' (tell me who that was, for bonus Cool points).
I've babbled quite enough for today. Off to continue to continue. Have a Positive Thursday.

Peace,
Danny

Happy

Hi,
Well, my trip to the Thai Consulate left me looking for a
ceiling to dance on. Everything is going fine with our paperwork.
There is a rather casual attitude, with regards some questions. When
I told the woman it was for a retirement visa, it was like 'oh, just
come on over'. Seriously, the little things are not worth the
sweat. See, already going through culture shock. (Ha)
That little song I threw at you on Monday didn't stir many
memories (apparently). It was "Over and Over" by Bobby Day. If you
think that one was a zinger, check out this next one. It's one that
we hum, sing the hook and hum:
"Madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer, With a teenage
diplomat. In the dumps with the mumps, As the adolescent pumps, His
way into his hat...." Clue: this crazy lyric is from a song that was
a pretty big hit somewhere in the 70s. It contains a line that is
still a mystery to most listeners. I will reveal the line tomorrow.
Then you'll remember.
The August Chronicles: I picked him up from Science Camp a
little early, hoping to be back at the condo in time to let Lisa
through the gate. Nice plan. He wasn't ready to leave. He had to
show me how he had made a 'trash switch'. He used 'found objects' to
fashion a dimmer light switch. My job was to sit patiently while he
put it together, explaining the function of each piece of plastic.
More on this later.
We left school and headed for 'Loco' for our picnic dinner.
While in line, he had to analyze the path of wires and sound (that's
what he does) from the little mic/speaker in the driveway, to the
headset of the order taker. His little mind never stops. Once he
gets a concept, then his imagination dives head first, into possible
scenarios. Fascinating and tiring. We rendezvoused with Lisa at the
market (after a lot of explaining to August). They went in with the
card and I parked on the street. I walked onto the grounds and
arrived at the condo before them. That's because Mr. A has to press
all the buttons and use all the keys. He's getting quite good at it,
but it takes time.
We ate on the floor this week. We were going to watch part of a
movie, but he declared that most of the animated features we offered
were 'boring'. I know where he learned that word. Anyway, after
eating, we went for a long, detailed walk. More tomorrow.
It's time for a Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny
