Compromise

Hi,

Yesterday we had lunch with old friends, and our 'Little Family' returned from their vacation. A mellow day in Southern California.

It's nice when 'Easy Monday' works. Clearly it did this time since so many of you knew the song. Here's more:
"In and out my life, you come and you go, leaving just your picture behind and I kissed it a thousand times...__ __ __ __, I love you and nobody else." Hint: Sung by four guys from a motor-city label. They were on top of their game for quite a while.

Blue and Ming traveled to the coast yesterday for lunch. Coming from Rancho Cucamonga, it was a journey. We hadn't seen Ming since late last summer. We met at Emerald Thai, one our favorite spots to eat. Memories, life updates, and art business were some of the things on the table besides lunch. They will be going to Thailand in late August and spending some time with us in the north.

I had neglected to tell you that when we returned to Culver City this trip it was to an empty house. Jeff, Anna, C-Bass and August were on vacation in Seattle and Vancouver. We did have the company of their two dogs, Peaches and Lola, but that's not the same. Yesterday evening we picked them up at LAX and had a wonderful reunion. Both boys came out to our apartment and hung with us separately. We got accounts of their vacation and what they liked and didn't like. Kids just tell you what's on their minds. It's nice. We'll probably have another episode of 'The August Chronicles' tomorrow so stay tuned.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Do

Hi,

It's a bright, beautiful morning here in Culver City, CA. What's that got to do with Adventures in Thailand? Well, hang around for a minute and I'll explain.

The weekend song was one that most of you got. "I Want You Back" by The Jackson Five. It's Easy Monday:
"Sugar pie, honey bunch, you know that I love you __ __ __...." Hint: Is that really necessary? Sing the line and you'll have it in a snap. After all, it's easy Monday.

Coming to America (catchy phrase) always prompts comparisons and changes in perception. While the morning is beautiful, it's not usual for us to feel these cool temperatures. Mornings in Chiang Rai are warm. I've talked a lot about driving around in both countries and I'm still realizing things. In L.A. there are black and white cars and motorcycles that monitor the driving of motorists and help when needed. In Chiang Rai there is no such thing. That means when I'm here, I have to stay aware of my driving and the 'monitors'. I can't take the liberties that I've learned to take 'over there'.

Paper money in Thailand comes in different colors and sizes for each denomination. It makes it easy to know the bill you're dealing with, but some bills can get lost behind others. It's nice to have all the money the same size. Now if you could just work on the color thing. (Ha)

Our weekend was a busy one. We picked up my mom Jean in Altadena, and had a Thai lunch in Pasadena. After a visit and a nap we went back down to Pasadena for a wedding at Castle Green (the old Green Hotel). The groom is the son of our friend Debby, a childhood friend of Lisa's. The whole affair was beautiful, unique, and fun. It was also a family reunion for Debby and her family. It was nice to be part of it all.

Yesterday we went went out to Thousand Oaks and had lunch with the Valley Cousins and then watched the youngest member of the family, Sophia, perform in a big dance production. She was a Tulip in Alice In Wonderland. We managed to stay awake through the first half and then the Jet Lag hit. It's getting better though.

Have a Wonderful Week.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

Well, needless to say the jet lag has set in and another theory goes down the drain. We woke up early yesterday, got sleepy in the afternoon, and again in the early evening. Woke up early again today. Oh well.

The song that a bunch of us were humming yesterday was "Baby Come Back" by Player. Now you know.

All around the world people are paying tribute to the late Michael Jackson. For the weekend identify this tune:
"Oh baby give me one more chance (show you that I love you) Won't you please let me (back in your heart)..."
Clue: You know who did it (I hope). It's a continuing theme from the last song. Now I've completely given it away.

Returning to America brings some subtle challenges that might not come to mind. For instance, there are greetings and responses that become automatic. Now, they are not understood. There is a form of broken English that is totally necessary in Thailand but would make me sound like I was 'talking down' to you if you heard it. In fact, Lisa catches some of these patterns in my writing and we have a good laugh. An example would be: 'What are you doing?' comes out 'What you do?' Simple and to the point, but not considered good English.

Driving in America: Pedestrians have the right of way. It's not OK to turn in front of on-coming traffic. The turn signal lever is on the left, and the wipers are on the right. Yesterday I hit the wipers way too many times. Driving on the other side of the road (the left side) is against the law in most situations. Double parking is frowned upon. I am enjoying the way traffic flows in an orderly fashion. I suppose the threat of road rage or a ticket might have something to do with it. Hmm.

Yesterday we made the rounds of our favorite suppliers of necessary items. You know what I mean. Target, Vitamin World, Trader Joe's, etc. SoCal fixes. (Ha) There's stuff you just can't find in Chiang Rai. If only they would raise the weight limit at the airlines.

This weekend we get busy. Lunches, dinners, a wedding and more. I'll fill in the blanks for you on Monday. I would like to direct your attention to the links at the bottom of this message. The Risingstardom link has changes and so has the site. Ming Johnson has taken it to another level. Be sure to stop by and check out the informative posts by him and his dad 'Bangkok Blue' Johnson.

It's time for the 'Funnies'. Have a Warm, Wonderful WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

An 8-year-old girl went to her dad, who was working in the yard. She
asked him, "Daddy, what is sex?" The father was surprised that she
would ask such a question, but decides that if she is old enough to
ask the question, then she is old enough to get a straight answer. He
proceeded to tell her all about the "birds and the bees." When he
finished explaining, the little girl was looking at him with her mouth
hanging open. The father asked her, "Why did you ask this question?"
The little girl replied, "Mom told me to tell you that dinner would be
ready in just a couple of secs."

Secret

Hi,

Today I have my feet planted firmly on the ground. So far there has been a bit of culture shock, driving disorientation, and a feeling of deja vu.

I got many responses to the current song. Only one had the group correct. That's OK, it's just a game.
"__ __ __, any kind of fool could see, there was something in everything about you. __ __ __, you can blame it all on me. I was wrong, and I just can't live without you." Clue: The singer wants the singee to return. What do you call the participants in a game? Oh my, I just gave it away.

Over the Pacific Ocean there was a lot of sleeping going on. The airline magazine suggested that when flying from west to east you should sleep to lessen the jet lag. Interesting, since we refer to the origin of our flight as being in the east yet we are moving from west to east. More Twilight Zone biz. I won't know until this afternoon if it made any difference. If I crash, as is usually the case, then it didn't matter. Oh yeah, I woke up early this morning (4:30am) after going to bed quite late (1:30am). It may all be a myth to get passengers to sleep more. (Ha)

For the next three weeks you'll be getting this in the U.S. a little later than before. I may want to sleep in and then write. When I'm in Thailand it's early evening when I write to you and yet you get it early in the morning. Isn't that amazing? No.

After we went through the lines for immigration clearance and all, we took the shuttle over to Hertz for our car. Giant props to a dear friend who is our 'Rental Guru', there was a car waiting for us. No standing in line, nothing to do but get in and leave. Then I proceeded to turn on the wipers instead of the turn signal as we left the lot. That will no doubt continue for a few days as I get acclimated to the other side of the car, on the other side of the road, on the other side of the world.

Just in case you would like to say 'Hello' or get directions to our house (Ha) my number in America is:
(858) 231-7793 Lisa's number is: (310) 280-8597

Have a Great Thursday,

Peace,
Danny

Principles

Hi,

I'm coming to you from high above the South China Sea, on the way to Taipei. I'll probably finish this in the airport, but it was too dramatic an intro to pass up.

"School's Out" was the song. It was by Alice Cooper. Now if you look at the clues it makes perfect sense. See, I try to help. (Ha) This one needs no introduction: "All day long, wearing a mask of false bravado. Trying to keep up the smile that hides a tear." Hint: The singer wasn't playing, he was begging in this mid-tempo number.

Our day began at 5am. Daku was totally caught off guard since he's usually the one that gets the day started. He wakes up and comes to the bed with a stuffed toy in his mouth, tail wagging, happy as can be and wants to play. I started to grab the toy and mess with him this morning but there was work to do. We managed to get everything packed and double-checked and we were ready to go at 7am. Tye took us to the airport in our car and dropped us off. Inside we learned that we were slightly overweight at the Air Asia counter. Hmm, it's OK this time.

Our flight to Bangkok was quick. Well, shorter than scheduled anyway. We had a whole day to wait in the airport but it actually went pretty fast. First we checked on the weight of our bags at EVA. Since they have a higher weight limit everything was fine, but we couldn't check our bags because it was too early. We found a private vendor that checked bags and headed for the level with food. It had been 6 hours since our light breakfast.

After a meal of so-so chicken burgers (couldn't resist) we went for a foot massage. At the counter we requested 'foot, shoulder, hand' but all we got was foot and shoulder. It was one of the best I've ever had. My operator really worked on the reflex points. They use a small stick that has a different shape on each end. The stick is used to focus pressure on points on the body (pressure points) and open up blockage of energy. We both left feeling much better and ready for the rest of the day.

We timed everything so that we were able to check in after our massage. That meant that we could go through the passport check and enter the world of high-end designer shops and the EVA Lounge. We did a bunch of walking and looking and searching for a headphone splitter. After finding one we went to the lounge and hung out. We watched an episode of Smallville, real escape stuff, had some munchies, and got away from the airport vibe.

Sitting in the shade of a pillar in the waiting area for our flight gave us a front row seat to watch everyone who was going to be on our flight. It was quite fascinating, seeing the travelers and wondering where they were going and what their story was. Most of the plane was going back to Taipei. They held Chinese passports. Our plane left late but made good time. It took us 3 1/2 hours to reach our destination.

Now we're in the EVA lounge in Taipei waiting for the longest segment of our trip. From here to LAX will take 11 hours and 45 minutes. Total flight time from Chiang Rai to L.A. is 16.35. If you add the waiting time it gets you a free pass to the Twilight Zone. We left on the 24th and we arrive on the 24th, even though we've been traveling for 24 hours. Hmm. What?

It's time for Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Measure

Hi,

With less than a day left, there were more loose ends and errands to do. There were items to be packed and lists to be checked. Isn't this fun? Three weeks away from home is more than a camping trip or a getaway. It's almost like moving. Hmm.

As I expected, some of you knew this song. Silly me, I thought it was easy. Maybe today's lyrics will help out:
"Out for summer, out 'til fall. We might not come back at all. __ __ forever, __ __ for summer..." Hint: What happens this time of year? It makes teachers sigh. Some even smile.

This morning our friend Jenny and her sister Atom came over to see Lisa's art and discuss the progress on the translations they have been doing for the art show catalogue. There are some things that don't translate from English to Thai very well and they have been very helpful with our effort to communicate. Lisa explained one of the mediums that she uses called the 'cast acrylic print'. It was invented by her father, Joseph Zirker. We're hoping to have a description of the process at the show so people will understand this new process. This is probably the first time it's been seen in Thailand.

After lunch we went downtown to get the last bit of running done. Chiang Rai is the kind of town where you can become a 'local' in a short time by being a friendly, repeat customer at the shops you like. We started our 'run' at the car wash. It would be a shame to leave a dirty car in the car port for three weeks. After we left the car we walked down to 7-11 to pay a couple of bills. Then we crossed the street to the pharmacy warehouse for a few things and then up to Tops for a supply of cookies. Then we headed back in the direction of the car. Lisa stopped at the bookshop where she trades books, plus a small price. I walked up to the car and drove down near the bookshop. In the course of all that we saw many people we see every time we go downtown. A smile, a nod and warmth that can't be described. Oh, as soon as I got in the car, it started raining lightly. Oh well, it was clean.

When we got home Boot informed us that Kek would be coming over to show us the price-list of the plants and trees we'd ordered. We waited as long as we could and decided it was time for our last swim at home and just as Lisa got in the pool, Kek arrived. We handled the business and had a very nice swim.

Just after the swim, Johan arrived and we talked about the pool and how it's doing. He's going to Nigeria by way of Holland while we're gone. He'll be doing some consulting in four cities. Not a vacation at all.

The dogs have a sense that something is going on, what with the suitcases on the floor and all the walking in and out of the closet. They're being very affectionate and it's making it harder to think about being gone for so long.

Have a Happy Tuesday and I'll write you from an airport somewhere in Asia. (Ha)

Peace,
Danny

Good

Hi,

It's getting down to crunch time as we prepare for our summer trip to America. We hit all the markets in town getting last minute items, and there's a story to be told. Stay tuned.

The weekend song was Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get A Witness". Oh, you should have known. Now it's Easy Monday:
"No more pencils, No more books, No more teacher's dirty looks..." Clues: He wore make-up when he sang this tribute to the end of something. Notice all the kids on the streets? Hmm.

There has been so much activity around the art show that had to be settled before we leave that we're just getting down to the serious packing. Translations had to be made from English to Thai and Thai to English. Decisions had to be made about many things, including photos, biographies, etc. The layout for the catalog is being produced by our dear friend Blue Johnson in America. He will then send the whole package via email to the printer in Chiang Mai. Oh my, ain't technology grand? It's all falling into place and we'll be able to travel without too much anxiety. (Ha)

Sunday we had our usual lunch at Big C and then went to the downtown market for a few things. In the course of our 'looking' we went to a stall that sold Buddhist amulets. The man motioned for me to follow him through the back of his stall to an unknown location. Lisa followed us and then I heard her exclaim. Scampering across the aisle was a rather large rodent. Lisa managed to jump over it as it ran past. Everyone laughed, as is the custom, and then we came upon a cat and Lisa told it that there was some 'work' for him on the other aisle. That gave us a laugh of our own.

Today we went to the frame shop to get some of Lisa's pieces ready for the show. Things were going smoothly until we discovered he didn't have a matt color that we needed. Now we have to see if there's another source for the matt here in Chiang Rai. If not, we may have to try and bring some back with us.

After the frame shop it was back to Big C to return some items and then off to look for something for me to wear to a wedding. We went to a shop across from our 'First Home', The Wancome Hotel, and found a beautiful Thai shirt. In the afternoon we took Daku to Dr. Arnon for another puppy shot. He now weighs 19 kilos (almost 42 pounds) and he's only 5 months old. Oh yeah, he's gonna be a big dog.

Now all we have to do is pack our bags and try and stay under the weight limits. Not like the old days. Weigh too much and they charge you. Hmm.

Have a Great Week.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

Today is Friday and it was the day we were supposed to get our new internet connection. (Ha) Today is Friday and I haven't even thought about what I'll take on our trip. (Ha) Today is Friday, a good day to laugh. (Ha)

I know it taxed some of your memories, but you finally remembered "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. A classic in my book. For the weekend let's change it up a bit. "Listen everybody, especially you girls, is it right to be left alone while the one you love is never home?..." Hint: There's kind of a court/church thing with the title. Hmm. He wants to know what's goin' on.

I should have known that when I didn't hear from Khun Nucha earlier this week, that something was not right. I called his phone this morning and got a message saying 'The number you have dialed turn off.' I went over to CAT and discovered that no order had been placed. OK My friend Nina, who speaks very good English and is very helpful, took me in to see her boss and we worked it all out. I won't know how the whole thing will be until we return in July. We'll just have to plod along with our current system until next week. Next Thursday we'll be in Broadband heaven when we connect in Culver City.

Sometimes preparation is the key. I haven't thought about what to take to America, but today we got a new suitcase. That's preparation. So there's progress. (Ha) If the forecasts are correct (right) it's going to be warm and that means I can just bring what I've been wearing here in Chiang Rai. That's pretty cool. Light cotton will be the uniform of the day.

The dogs are going to be with Boot for three weeks. They will be in doggie heaven. They both love her and she loves them. Unfortunately we may not have much of a lawn in the back when we get back. When they're left alone outside they've started digging. Daku has also started chewing rocks. It's funny/not funny to see both dogs lying on the grass looking like cows chewing their cud. Daku will drop the rock if I insist but BamBam thinks it's a game and challenges anyone who tries to stop her. She's very agile and can shift and turn and evade any chase. Today I just walked away in frustration. Then I shook the 'cookie box' and she came running into the house. Without the rock.

It's time for the 'Funnies'. Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher.

Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?'

Go

Hi,
We survived the Night Bazaar last night. Today we went to two shopping centers with the same name and then made a non-stop dash for home.

I see that quite a few of you have retained your 70's memories. It was a different flavor of Rock but I loved it.
"In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings, sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder." Hint: Hmm, if you don't know this one, you probably should.

After I wrote to you last night, we went down to the streets to check out the Night Bazaar. Our hotel was right off the main street. Times are rough all over and we noticed prices were up and desperation was in the air. Some vendors were doing good business but those who didn't have something unique were suffering. We found some deals and watched some artists at work. Some of the photo-realists do fascinating work in charcoal and oil pastels.

This morning we slept in since we didn't have our 'Daku alarm' to wake us up. That made the trip a vacation. After a bad 'free' breakfast in the hotel we set out to find a good cup of coffee. The same street that had been bustling the night before was just waking up. Shop owners were lifting metal doors and Tuk-Tuk drivers were polishing their steeds for another day as a light sprinkle cooled the air. We found coffee and a driver to take us to our first destination.

There are two shopping centers called "Central" in Chiang Mai. We've been to the newer one (Airport Central) but we wanted to go to the original so we could check out the dance wear supply store. Our driver was really cool. We made friends on the way. When we found the store, they hadn't opened yet. They were having a staff meeting. We wandered around and noticed that there were a lot of empty shops. A sign of the times I guess. We finally got into the dance shop and found an impressive stock of dance related products. In fact, our resident ballet teacher left with a small bag and a big smile.

At Central number 2 we visited the iStudio, a tiny version of an Apple store. They didn't have a battery for my laptop so I'll have to wait until I get to America. I was able to get the little folding cart for our laptop backpack so the airports won't be such a drag. (no pun intended)

Along the way we learned that Chiang Mai has standardized some of the taxi fairs to make it easier on travelers. That was good to find out. Now we know why one cabbie wouldn't negotiate the price. We don't have taxis in Chiang Rai. The closest thing would be a Tuk-Tuk. Anyway, life in the big city is certainly different.

Our trip home was a non-stop drive through the mountains and valleys. It's 115 miles from downtown Chiang Mai to our house and it took us about 2 1/2 hours. Whew. We had our share of slow traffic on a two lane road, but not as much as the morning drive yesterday. My guess is that the big trucks take all day so they leave in the morning. We encountered local farm trucks and machines. This won't be the last time we drive south. Maybe now I'll stretch out a bit and we'll start exploring more. The car is so much fun to drive. 'Head out on the highway, lookin' for adventure...'

The dogs are very happy that we're home. We were happy to see them too. Three weeks away from them is going to be tough. Oh well.

Have a Cool Thursday.

Peace,
Danny

Teach

Hi,

I'm coming to you from downtown Chiang Mai. We're having a great trip and got all the important business taken care of.

The song we started the week with was "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles. It closed out the Sgt. Pepper LP.
"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold, and she's buying a __ __ __." Hint: It's by another group from across the pond. No, it's not Spiral Staircase but there's an obvious clue here if you're even close. (Ha)

It started raining about the time we had planned on leaving Chiang Rai so we waited until it stopped. We only encountered a small patch of rain on our drive down. I drove carefully and didn't take the chances I watched many drivers take. The risks some drivers take is jaw-dropping. We just let them have the road. We stopped and ate at a big hot springs complex and took some pictures.

When we got to town we followed the map and we were doing pretty well until we missed a turn. I had a sense of where we needed to be so we drove through some tiny little streets until I saw a landmark looming above the trees. We finally got to the hotel and there was a sign in the lobby welcoming Lisa. Amazing Thailand.

Our friends Ten and Alan picked us up at our hotel and took us to the print shop where Lisa negotiated the planning for her art show catalog. Then we had an early dinner and returned to the hotel. It was a good day.

Now we're going down to the street where the Night Bazaar is going on. This is a lot different from Chiang Rai, but it's fun in small doses.

It's time for Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Pleasure

Hi,
It was a busy day here in Chiang Rai. There was a list of things to do and people to see, and it all got done. We also had time for a relaxing swim. Ahhh.

I guess starting the week with an easy one is good for all of us. I think I'll call them 'Easy Mondays'. I get mail.
"I read the news today, oh, boy, about a lucky man who made the grade..." Hint: A lot can happen in a day. It's from one of this groups biggest LPs.

This morning we had an appointment at the salon that Boot introduced us to yesterday. It was the most efficient experience we've had yet. I've had a shampoo here before, complete with scalp massage but today's was something special. There was this gentle thumb thing that massaged my temples, went around my ears and ended with a neck massage. We were there for three hours and left looking and feeling great.

As we left the salon we got a call from Gahn. We were going to try and meet her at her house an 1pm. It turned out she was at our house. That saved us some driving and made things a little smoother for the rest of the day. She had some alterations she was returning. Everything fit right and she was given more. Then it was time for a late lunch.

A little after lunch Tye and her husband Pong arrived. We wanted to get a few pointers about Chiang Mai. They helped us locate the print shop, an art supply house and the dance supply store on our map. We got insight on how the city is laid out and the direction of some key streets. Not that I plan to drive all over town, but it's good to know.

Not long after Tye and Pong left we had another visitor. Kek, our landscape guy, came over so we could discuss some additional plants and trees that we want to add to the scenery. We walked the yard and, with Boot's help, explained what we wanted and where. We're gradually getting a concept of how we want things to be. We started with his plan and now we're making it ours. Very gratifying.

By the time we finished with Kek it was really time to hit the pool. Walking the yard and standing in the sun made the heat of the day very apparent. I forgot to mention that yesterday Lisa started swimming again. It's a lot more fun with two in the pool than doing solitary laps. We swam, discussed the yard from the pool level perspective and then sat in the sun. The perfect ending for a busy day.

Tomorrow morning we head for Chiang Mai. I may have to leave my laptop overnight for a drive replacement so if you don't get your message by 8am West Coast Time (US) go to the 'blogspot' link below. I will be able to post it from Lisa's computer but my email groups will be in the shop. (Ha)

Have a Happy Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Dance

Hi,
We had a very nice weekend here in Chiang Rai. No rain to speak of, just blue skies and humidity. We baby-sat the dogs and hit the town on Sunday.
The weekend song was "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum. Seems that one took some of you back a ways. "Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Found my way downstairs and drank a cup, and looking up, I noticed I was late..." Clue: It's by those four guys we know so well. Kind of a narrative with some odd references. Very dramatic ending. Hmm.
Our weekend was mellow, with Lisa painting, me working again on mastering the hanging of the dog bowl, and swimming. Saturday we had no rain so it was a pleasant break.
On Sunday, Boot went on a little road trip with some friends, which meant we had total dog duty. The 'kids' are really getting along well except when BamBam gets a little hyper during their play. She makes this growling sound that sounds like she's really tearing into Daku but she's very gentle. It just gets a little irritating after a while. That means she gets a 'time out'. When that doesn't work, they have to be separated. When they're just hanging out they will trade bones (rawhide chews) or play tug-of-war with a piece of rope. Sometimes one of them will be resting and the other will bring a toy over and just drop it on the other one's head. Those are the times when they are really cute. Daku is starting to get the upper hand on BamBam in some of their play battles and that means she has to escalate her strategies. It's all very entertaining.
We went to Black Canyon for Sunday lunch and when we walked in the manager asked us if we wanted buffalo steak. We all had a good laugh over that. We did our usual supply shopping and went home to tend to the dogs. That evening we went to the Night Bazaar, since it wasn't raining. There had been an afternoon shower but it was brief. We did some shopping after dinner, picking up things we planned to bring to America.
Boot had planned to be home Sunday night but called in the evening to say that she was staying over in Mae Chan. That meant a slumber party with the dogs. They did pretty well except for the fact that BamBam kept thinking she heard Boot come home and would get anxious. I'd have to take her down and show her that Boot wasn't home. She sleeps in Boot's apartment so her routine was thrown off. She finally settled down and both dogs slept most of the night. At one point Daku got caught under the bed and woke us up with a desperate whimper. Lisa just dragged him out and he went back to sleep. He's almost five months old and still doesn't realize how big he is.
Today we went out with Boot and enrolled her in another session of English classes at the A.U.A. language school. She started tonight. She also took us to her hair stylist so we could set up appointments for tomorrow.
Tuesday is going to be a very busy day for us. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow.
Have a Fabulous Week.
Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

A special occasion was missed yesterday so we'll celebrate today. We had a day without rain so we washed the car. Plus, more observations from the street (Driving in Chiang Rai).

Now would be a good time for you to get acquainted with the music of Kenny Rankin because he was the artist who sang "Haven't We Met?". Go ahead, sample some tunes on iTunes, pick up a CD, Google and read about him.

For the weekend I'm giving you what should be an easy one. Even if it's before your time, you should know this: "We skipped the light fandango, turned cartwheels 'cross the floor. I was feeling kinda seasick but the crowd called out for more..." Clue: Title refers to the color of a non-color. What?

Yesterday marked the 500th entry on "Adventures In Thailand". The blog began just before we left America on our adventure. Our friend Kathie suggested it so that anyone could keep up with the story. This all really began before the word blog was in our collective vocabularies. I've been sending out a daily message to friends and family for quite a few years. The 500 is the official 'Blog' count. The main point of all this is that a lot of words have been pouring out and finding their way to computers in many parts of the world. I'm very grateful to all of you who reply, respond or just let me know you're there. Whether you get this as an email or read it on the blog site, I look forward to sharing my life with you every day.

A quick revelation from the streets of Chiang Rai. If you take the attitude that you're the only one on the street and nothing can harm you, then you'll fit right in. We are continually amazed that there aren't more accidents. I guess that quarter of an inch clearance thing is working.

Now it's time for the 'Funnies'. Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.

Peace,

Danny

The following is an ad from a real-life

TUESDAY Notice: We regret having erred In R.D.
Jones' ad yesterday. It should have read "One sewing machine for sale cheap.
Phone 948-0707 and ask for Mrs. Kelly, who lives with him after 7 P.M."

WEDNESDAY Notice: R.D. Jones has informed us that he has received
several annoying telephone calls because of the error we made in the classified

Kelly who loves with him."

THURSDAY Notice: I, R.D. Jones, have no sewing

Everything

Hi,

Today we had blue sky and warm humid air. Today we went out for lunch. And yes, today it rained. Hmm.

What a thrill to know that some of you knew the current song. Maybe today's clue will give you a boost. (Ha)
"And I know that’s just how it happened, when Romeo met Juliet. Somewhere I read that old Romeo said, “Pardon me, __ __ __?” Clue: The title is one of those well worn pick-up lines, but in this context it's very romantic.

We went to Black Canyon Coffee for lunch today. It's usually Sundays that we go there for lunch but Boot had a doctor's appointment so we hit the town. There never seems to be a time when the Big C complex is not busy. We ended up at a table in the back and while we were waiting for our food a Farang (foreigner) came in and began talking at a higher volume than is usually heard here. He spoke in a combination of English and Thai, with a German accent. He kept going on about wanting to order buffalo and the servers kept trying to tell him that they didn't serve buffalo. At one point he went to the table next to us an went on about it. We held our breath, hoping he wouldn't come over to us. Thankfully he didn't and finally left. When we got our bill we told our server that next time we'd like some buffalo. She started laughing and went into this big thing about the guy, all in Thai. We got the tone of what she was saying and we all had a good laugh.

I think I have the rain routine down now. It seems to come at around 5pm every day. I swim around 4 and by the time I'm heading back upstairs the rain hits. It was a short downpour and then it was over.

We got our bill from the internet company today and I went over to pay it. I didn't go into all the problems since they already know and it wouldn't have made a difference. The woman at the counter has seen me come in often but we've never really had any business to speak of. Anyway, at one point she looked up at me and said "You are very kindly". I was taken aback. I said 'Thank you' in Thai and we continued with the payment of the bill. I guess there are people who come in and get irate about the service and don't follow 'custom'. Hmm.

I also managed to do a bit of handyman work around the house today. I made some adjustments on my weather-proofing job on the door to my music room and re-hung the doggie water bowl in our bathroom. Daku is very happy.

Have a Thrilling Thursday.

Peace,
Danny

Kindness

Hi,

Today was bright and sunny here in Chiang Rai. A road trip was planned, bugs did battle and I got a swim just before the storm. All that and more coming up.

I'm so glad that you remembered "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys. I love the production on that one. Now:
"I’ve ordered some rain for tomorrow. The sky will be sunny, but wet. And out of nowhere, you’re suddenly there, and I’ll say, “Pardon me, __ __ __” Clue: This song asks a question. It's by a song stylist who recently left the physical life. He will be missed by many. Try not to Google. If you do, say so. OK?

We have been wanting to go down to Chiang Mai before we leave for America. We settled on the 17th so we could visit our friends Alan and Ten, meet with the printer of the show catalog and pick up a few things. Normally we ride down on the VIP bus. I have not wanted to drive down because I don't know the city and it's a big one compared to Chiang Rai. Lisa got out a map and realized that it wasn't too hard to get to our hotel from the highway. Once there we could use local transportation to get around. So, we're taking the little car on it's first road trip. There are many pluses to this. We can leave when we want, stop when we want, and come home with as much as we want. There's also the fact that I always imagined trying to do the trip in the pick-up. The car is a totally different machine. This will be enjoyable.

This morning Johan and Noy came over to leave some salt and check on the pool. They noticed a battle going on between a wasp and a group of bees. Apparently some turf was infringed upon and it got ugly. The wasp lost. It was too close to a bee hive that we didn't realize was there. We called the bug guy but he doesn't do wasps, bees or whatever. Boot doesn't want to do anything because they don't bother her but there are nests over the pool deck area. Hmm.

I almost forgot. Last night Boot went to a wedding and called to say that because of the distance, she'd be staying overnight. That meant that both dogs stayed with us. This was a first. They played, had to be put on 'time outs', chewed things, played and finally crashed. I had to take them out, one at a time, and it was weird because the lawn was all soggy from the rain. What fun we had. (Ha) They started their sleeping in different parts of the room and when we woke up, they had moved to opposite sides. Of course they got up early so none of us got much sleep. This afternoon everybody took a nap.

Late afternoon today I managed to get in my third swim in the pool since they restarted the saline chlorinator. It's like night and day. No smell, and the consistency of the water feels soft and dense. About five minutes after I got out another brief storm hit. Didn't last long but it left a lot of water. Let's hear it for the rainy season.

It's time for a Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Flow

Hi,

It's been a strange few days with some of our basics. Low water pressure, slow internet pressure. (Ha) If you thought you got yesterday's (Monday's) message a little late, you were right.

I got a few hits on the tune already. Even heard from someone who didn't like the group but knew the song.
"I'm pickin up __ __, shes giving me excitations..." Hint: How hard can it be from here. You just got a gift. No hints.

For quite a few days our water pressure has been very low. So low that the other night I went out and walked the perimeter of the yard and checked all the faucets just in case there was a leak. We finally had Boot check with the water department and got several stories. The second time she asked they said they'd send someone. Nobody's come yet but the pressure is a little better today.

I have whined about our erratic internet connection for quite some time. It started off great and has slowly declined. After a total failure last night, I ended up having to drive into town and send the message from Doi Chaang Coffee. That's why it was late. Today I went back to CAT and was told that it would be back this afternoon and it was. During my 'visit' my new friend Nucha suggested that maybe we'd do better with their ADSL package since it's not dependent on a wireless signal. I also learned that the number of clients in a given area has a direct bearing on service. The CDMA wireless modem we're using has become popular and the traffic has increased. So, we're going to a new system with only ten clients per line. This should provide us with a more stable connection and I can stop complaining. Actually, people all over the country are complaining about internet service in one form or another. Be grateful for your broadband.

This afternoon I went to the hardware store and got the things I'd need to secure the wall mount water bowl in our bathroom so the dogs will always have a supply. While I was working, BamBam was startled again by the sound of the metal bowl against the tile. She ran to the far side of the room and hasn't been in the bathroom since. Lisa tried to get her to drink from the bowl after it was mounted but she'll have none of it. Daku loves it and marched right up and drank. Speaking of Daku, tonight he spoke. Over and over while he and BamBam were playing. He got used to the sound of his little high-pitched 'yip' and kept doing it. Oh yeah, and it was loud too. I just hope it's a phase he's going through.

Right now it's Tuesday night and we're having some really high winds. I just hope it doesn't include rain. That means extra work around here dealing with water being blown in under a few doors. And just then, 'KaBlam', the rain started. Oh well, it's Thailand.

Have a Happy Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Lost

Hi,

It was a busy weekend at the Big Brown House. We had a dinner, a gathering of artists and of course, rain. And that's just the big stuff.

The weekend song eluded most of you. It was "A Fool In Love" by Ike & Tina Turner. I was told that it would only be recognized by 'old people'. Hmm. It was a pretty old tune. Maybe you'll do better with this one:
"I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and the way the sunlight plays upon her hair." Clues: It's about a buzz of sorts, caused by a special person. The tune is by a California group that spent a lot of time on the sand. Hmm.

Saturday we had dinner with Dr. Arnon and his family. His wife couldn't make it but his mother-in-law and his two kids came and we had a very warm evening. He has a girl who is 5 and a boy who is 3. We talked of many things and learned a lot about our favorite vet. Last year he was voted Best Veterinarian in Thailand. We had been noticing a big building project across the street from his office and found out that it will be the new home for his practice. He's building a state of the art facility complete with a rehab therapy pool for dogs. Oh, and his kids love Superman. Why not?

Sunday afternoon was 'Art Day' at our house. The owner of 9 Gallery, Sompong and his wife Nai, came over to view and select the art that Paradorn and Lisa will have in the August show. Paradorn and his wife Mau came a little early to set up his work. The house was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. As it turned out, Sompong was quite impressed with all the work and left it up to the artists to decide what to show. Sompong commented that he could see Lisa's 'spirit' in her work. Then we discussed the art biz aspect of the show and got all the details involved in the 'production'. We were left with many things to do. It was pretty cool to think that in less than two years we have been welcomed into the art community and Lisa will have a show at the 9 Gallery. There we were, three couples all working towards a common goal. Nice.

One of the things that was needed by Nai was photos of five pieces. Paradorn left his work at our house and he and his wife returned today and I photographed all of his work while we had good weather. The muted sunlight was perfect for shooting his work outside. The new camera performed beautifully.

BamBam and Daku wanted to visit with all our guests this weekend but we had to keep them at a distance. They get so excited and it would have been a major distraction. Also, on Sunday there was art work all over the floor. Not a good mix.

The dogs got to play in the yard between the rain and they were very cute, running and bounding and chasing each other. BamBam loves to run. Daku has his moments, but he's growing so fast that he's still a bit clumsy. He's the 'joker' of the two and is always full of mischief. It's hard to remember that he's still a baby.

Have a Great Week.

Peace,
Danny

Friday Funnies

Hi,

Today was a 'stay at home' day for me. It rained off and on all day. Lisa went out with Tye and met with a printer and found a dry cleaner. We finalized the last portion of our travel arrangements. Whew.

The song some of you got stuck with was "He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother" as done by The Hollies. If you go to Wikipedia, you'll find several historical references to the song title, from a long time ago. Hmm. Anyway, that was the song.

For the weekend we'll ponder something you may remember, even if you weren't born yet. (Ha) It's classic stuff.
"...You know you love him, you cant understand why he treats you like he do when he's such a good man."
Hint: Performed by a couple who later broke up. Movie of their lives was a hit. She's still at it wearing nylons. Hmm, was I foolish enough to give it away?

This morning Lisa did some painting and I learned more about the new camera. We did more planning on our upcoming trip to America as well as the art show. The timing of certain things gets interesting when trying to plan for printing in another city and translations, etc. Progress is being made on all fronts and that's a good thing.

This afternoon our friend Tye came and picked up Lisa and they went to get an early estimate on the catalog for the show. We will have it made in Chiang Mai, but we were looking for 'ball park' costs. They went from there to a dry cleaner that Tye knew of. It's something we hadn't seen, but knew must exist. Most of what we wear on a daily basis is washable but there are certain things that just have to be cleaned.

With a little help from our friends we managed to finally get our reservations on Air Asia for the flights to and from Bangkok. Now everything is set and we're ready to go. (Ha) Oh yeah, pack the bags and all that. We will be arriving in America on June 24 and will depart on July 15.

You may have noticed that I used the word America several times. That's because here in Thailand, that's what it's called. Not the U.S. or the States, but America. Hmm. Of course they don't say it like you say it, if that's where you live. I threw that in because this message has become international. There are readers in Thailand, Bali, New Zealand and Europe.

This morning Daku slept until 6am and made us very happy. We've been staying up late watching the French Open. That's something we never would have done on a regular basis before. Our friend John got us into tennis when he was visiting from Bali. Now we're kinda into it. Still don't know why they score the way they do but I guess I could find out. While on a train of thought, has anybody every watched Snooker? There's an interesting scoring system (he said with tongue in cheek). And now for the question of the week: Why don't they have the Side Stroke in competitive swimming?

Now it's time for the real 'Funnies', from my friend Martin. Have a Mellow WeekEnd.

Peace,
Danny

Maxine was driving down the street in a sweat because she had an
important meeting and couldn't find a parking place.

Looking up toward heaven, she said, 'Lord, take pity on me. If you
find me a parking place I will go to church every Sunday for the rest
of my life and give up sex and tequila.'

Miraculously, a parking place appeared.

She looked up again and said, 'Never mind. I found one.

Limits

Hi,

Today began as a slightly overcast day. That was just the beginning. Then the rains came. Before that we were out and about. It was a good day.

Many of you recognized the opening line of the song. Hopefully, the rest of you will get this from the blanks. (Ha)
"No burden is he to bear. We'll get there for I know he would not encumber me __ __ __, __ __ __." Hint: It's a symbolic song that recognizes that everyone is a sibling. Now how hard can this be?

Last night we tried keeping Daku up as long as he would play. It worked pretty well because he slept until 6am. That was a big change. Now the trick will be to get him to stay awake without all the attention and still sleep in. Only time will tell.

This morning we went over to Dr. Arnon's to see if BamBam still needed to take special vitamins, and to pick up another metal water bowl. They have this special bowl that mounts on the side of a cage and we got one and both dogs drink from it. This is important since Daku likes to 'Dance' in the bowl and splash the water out and then lie in it. Ugh. With the elevated bowl there's no spilled water. We got a second one for the upstairs so we don't have to supervise his drinking.

From the vet's we drove out to Big C. I should mention that this is the first day that Lisa has been 'out' in some time. After much research last night we settled on a camera and made our purchase at "Big Camera." The service was outstanding and we left with a Fuji Super Zoom that will do what we need. That is of course, after we read the manual. Oh, not that.

After our brief stop at The 'C' we went over to a print shop we knew about to try and get an idea of cost for the catalog for Lisa's art show. The last time we were there the man we thought was the boss spoke pretty good English. Today nobody spoke a word and communication was nowhere around. We finally left and Lisa made arrangements with Tye to go back tomorrow and translate. Whew.

Lunch time brought a deluge. We were actually pretty happy about it since lawn food had been spread yesterday and it needed to be watered. It was heavy at times but was gone in a couple of hours. Then the sun came back in time for Johan to drop by and turn on the pool chlorinator.

Lisa went to dinner with Sutheera and I ate at the house. It was different but OK. The dogs wanted to visit but Boot kept them out of my hair while I ate.

Like I said, it was a good day. Have yourself a Good Thursday too.

Peace,
Danny

Canvas

Hi,

We had a clear, sunny day in Chiang Rai. It was a perfect day for the pool guys and the landscape crew. I began a camera search and got my feet done. Huh?

A lot of you remembered "Mr. Tamborine Man" by Bob Dylan. It also had a notable 'hit' cover by The Byrds.
"The road is long, with many a winding turn..." Clue: 1969 mega hit by a group from across the pond. Became an anthem for many. The title has a long history.

This morning the yard was bustling with activity. First the men and women of the landscape crew started their day long process of grooming the place. It always amazes me when I watch them prepare themselves. Layers of clothes, sometimes two hats plus gloves and then they go to work in the sun. Meanwhile, I'm wearing one layer of the lightest cloths I have. Hmm. I showed Kek the sink hole and he told me he'd deal with it. That was good news. A little later the pool guys came and started their work followed by Johan, their boss. We talked about the health of the pool and decided it was time to go back to the salt chlorination system. Maybe by the end of the week I can get back in the water.

For almost two years we've been using a 'point and shoot' camera that's been more than adequate for the kinds of pictures we've been taking. Now we find we need something more sophisticated to get the full scope of Lisa's art work. I have seen the results of shots from better cameras so we decided it would be a worthwhile investment. Off to Big C to the camera kiosk on the second floor. I priced some cameras based on the specs we want and took down model numbers for later research. One of my briefest visits to the place in history.

With all the stair climbing and swimming lately, I've been feeling a little tight so at Lisa's suggestion, I went over to Pai and got a foot massage. It's actually a bit more than just the feet. It also includes the lower legs and the upper back and neck. I got a woman I'd had before and knew that she had very strong hands. That might have been a mistake on any other day, but I wanted all the knots and kinks dealt with. She did not disappoint. There was pain but then it was gone. I left feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of the day.

I realized something else about driving in Chiang Rai. There has always been a sense that everyone knew the rules of the game and that I was truly 'not from around here'. Well, I boiled it down to this: Dares go first! There is an attitude that might be viewed as pushy, bold, daring, crazy or all of the above, but it's how the road is handled. Every now and then I am able to let go of a little of my polite, western sensibility and push with the rest of them. There is a feeling of triumph and sadness at the same time. Hmm.

Daku is really getting used to sleeping upstairs with us. We have established a routine and he seems to enjoy it. We keep him up as long as we can and that has eliminated the 3am wake up. Now he gets up around 5am and is ready to start the day. That means he needs to go down to the yard. This morning we wanted to see if he'd go back to sleep. I have a pair of pants that I keep on the bed and he knows that I put them on when we go outside. Daku pulled the pants off the bed and walked around with them in his mouth and then came to my side of the bed. I couldn't have had a better hint than that. It was one of those moments that will be remembered for a long time.

Now begins Wacky Wednesday.

Peace,
Danny

Vision

Hi,

Today was sunny enough, at one point, for the dogs to get bathed. Planning for our summer trip to L.A. continued, and we are the not so proud owners of a small sink hole. What?

Where are all my music lovers. Only two responses to the song so far. I'll try to help you a little (Ha) with this:
"Hey! __ __ __, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! __ __ __, play a song for me, in the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you." Hint: Somehow there's a percussion instrument involved in the title. Now you're on your own.

Late this morning I was out at Big C. When I called to say I was on my way home Lisa told me it had started pouring at the house. The sun was shinning where I was. It wasn't until I turned for home that I drove into the rain. Weird. Then it stopped and the sun shone. Then later it sprinkled. Everything is so green right now that it's worth it to put up with the rain. The corn fields behind us were glistening in the late afternoon sun. It was almost magical.

A few days ago Boot was walking Daku out near the back wall when she noticed a hole in the flower bed. After close inspection I realized that it was indeed a sink hole. There was a plastic pipe imbedded in part of the yard in order to drain excess water out through the wall. It looks like the pipe broke and the earth just couldn't handle all the water and started eroding. It won't be pretty, but it can be resolved. Between Wit, our handy guy and our landscape guy, we should be able to fix it.

We will be traveling to Culver City on June 24 for our three week summer stay. The excitement is building with all the lists and reservations. There will be a summer wedding to attend, a trip to Northern Cali to see Joe (Lisa's Dad), and the Oakland Cousins, and the Athas family. Lots of breakfasts, lunches and dinners with friends as well as lots of time hanging out with 'The Boys' (August and C-Bass).

It's time for a Happy Tuesday.

Peace,
Danny

Eyes

Hi,

We've had some beautiful days in between the rain drops. I did a solo Sunday at Big C, and we'll cover the continuing adventures with the internet quandary. Read on, it gets good.

The weekend song only brought a few responses. It was "Fixing a Hole" by The Beatles. Hmm. Let's start the week with a song from 1964 by a poet who is still doing his 'thing'. This song had a major cover, but give me the original artist if you can. "Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand, vanished from my hand, left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping..." Clues: This song has had many interpretations, it's about a person making a request. This is the first verse, tomorrows lyric may set you free. (Ha)

Since Lisa had been told not to do a lot of walking, it meant that shopping was out of the question. Some of our usual routines have been altered a bit and Sunday lunch at Black Canyon was one of them. I set out with a list in hand and headed for Big C around 11 a.m. expecting the usual crowd. The line into the parking lot was the longest ever. It may have been that it was the last day of the month, I'm not sure. I sat for quite awhile and played 'chicken' with drivers trying to cut in line. Once I got parked, I made my way through the throngs and got a cart and focused on my list. Now that I know the store it was a piece of cake. I got everything we needed and made my way to the escalator. They have these carts with wheels that are supposed to lock when you put them on the ramp but I managed to get the one that didn't work. This might not have been so bad except for the fact that I had a big load of bottled water and the thing was very heavy. With one hand on the rail and one on the cart, plus a foot in front of the wheel, I managed to keep from turning the escalator into a bowling alley. (Ha)

After I loaded the car with all the goods I went back in and ordered lunch and dinner from Black Canyon. It all worked out perfectly and we had two nice meals without a lot of fuss.

This morning (Monday) I went back, once again, to CAT Telecom to find out if we were going to get a discount on our bill since we'd had so much interruption in our internet service. This had been mentioned by one of their people and I wanted to make sure. The conversation got sidetracked to questions about the current service since I've been such a frequent visitor. In the end, they had me fill out a 'request for discount' form and a tech followed me home to do some testing from our location. He spent about an hour at the house and I think we may have made some minor improvements, but it's still not what we're paying for. Ugh.

The day ended with an afternoon swim while Lisa and Boot hung out with the dogs on the patio. Later we had a delicious fish dinner while we watched some of the very first episodes of Saturday Night Live. Talk about nostalgia.

Have a Fantastic Week.

Peace,
Danny
