Teach

Hi,

Today was overcast for most of the day. It was the left-overs of the big storm we had Sunday night. The weekend was fun, with a Thai-Italian lunch, and dinner in a Thai-Dutch restaurant with the World Cup as our entertainment. The Picnic location has been confirmed so we hope to see you on July 18 at Culver City Park. It will be from 12n to 4pm. It's BYOP (Bring Your Own Picnic) The park is at Jefferson and Duquesne Ave. in Culver City.

There were a lot of 'Old School' pros out there. The song was "Blue Monday" by Fats Domino. Now for 'Easy Monday', a song by a group named for the national bird. "Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz. She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends. How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget." Clue: The title, in two words, is the name of a fictional establishment. Strange things go on there. It's so easy. If not, tomorrow you'll get the chorus. (Ha)

Saturday morning was 'Farm Chore Day' for me. I watered all the lawns. We held out for as long as we could, but the grass was begging for water. In the evening we went to 9 Gallery for an opening. The artist not only paints, but is also a music video director. The turnout was slow initially, so we were invited to go into the gallery for a guided tour by the artist. We learned so much more than if we'd just been part of the crowd. He explained the process of some of his pieces, and we got the political meaning of one series he was showing. The interesting thing was that I had been watching some Thai music videos on Youtube earlier in the day, and one of the groups I enjoyed was 'Clash', a Thai band that he had filmed. Later in the year he will direct his first feature film.

There seem to be several weather systems here in Chiang Rai. We were talking with Nine before the art show, and she was telling us that in the afternoon there had been a heavy rain storm just down the highway at Big C. It's about a mile south, yet no rain fell at the gallery or out our way. It can rain at our house, but not in town. Very strange stuff.

Sunday we went to the Pizza Company for lunch for spaghetti. We decided that we like the pizza better. Oh well. In the evening we went back to town for dinner at Aye's (pronounced 'A's'). There was only one other couple in the place, and they were sitting in front of a TV set. We were seated behind them so we could watch the World Cup match that was about to begin. What a treat. They had decorated the area around the set with lots of orange streamers, a shirt, and a banner from Holland. Aye, the Thai owner is married to Hans who is Dutch. We watched a bit of the match between Paraguay and Slovakia. After dinner we went to the Night Bazaar for a while, and then home.

Our observation for today centered around the age of the two-wheel riders in town. There are a lot more older people riding motorbikes than one might expect. We see men and women who appear to be in their 70's making their way through the traffic with great ease. I was trying to imagine this scene in L.A. and it just didn't compute. It all comes down to necessity I guess. If you've got to get there, you go by any means necessary.

Have a Great Week.

Peace,
Danny
