Friday Funnies

Hi,

Today we were out and about.  The riddle of the river was solved and we visited The Brain.  Read on for thrilling details (555).

The 'Zany Day' song was "Dang Me" by Roger Miller.  I suppose it's time for an easy 'Old School Friday' tune:
"Oooh, la la la la, I did you wrong, my heart went out to play, and in the game I lost you.  What a price to pay.   I'm cryin'.  __ __ __, __ __ __.  Mistakes, I know I've made a few, but I'm only human.  You've made mistakes too.  I'm cryin'.  __ __ __, __ __ __."  Clue:  The first word is more of an exclamation, and the next two are the same.  Hmm.  It's easy.

This morning we went to Chivit Tamma Da to take photos of Lisa's current mini exhibit.  We had a chance to talk to the owner about our question as to why the river seems fuller downstream.  He explained that there is a 'gate' downstream.  When the gate is open, the farmers in the area get lots of water.  When the gate is closed they have a hard time.  A few years ago the gate was open and the river area near town was very low.  A local politician felt that it did not look good for Chiang Rai to have such a weak looking river so they closed the gate.  Over time, they have reached some compromises on when and how much to open the gate.  Because it's the dry season, not much water is coming from the source, so the gate is partially open to give the farmers water.  Water management is still a work in progress in this area.

As a result of our conversations with friends, we determined that Cat needed to get the extra help that many successful students seem to get from outside tutoring.  One such place that was mentioned by our friend Tay, and some of Cat's friends, was "The Brain."  This afternoon we picked up Cat and her friends Pown and Mind, and we all went to The Brain.  The program was explained and they each enrolled in different 'classes'.  Actually, it's one-on-one tutoring with a computer.  I'm not sure how it works, but the students have access to the computer at their own convenience and they have three months to complete their studies.  Judging by the traffic, it's very popular with high school students.  Tomorrow we'll learn more about the process after Cat has her first physics session.

Our photo for the day was taken a few evenings ago.  Cat and Pown wanted a spicy dinner so they went into the village and got what they wanted.  The three bowls contain various fish and chicken dishes that are 'very hot'.  There is also a spicy cold vegetable dish and some kind of noodle thing.  They ate it all.  Oh, and no, apple juice is not a traditional Thai beverage.

The High Season is over and most of the buses full of tourists have gone.  In honor of this occasion, work on the downtown streets has begun again, with jack hammers pounding and workers installing new sidewalks.  Near one of the busy intersections there is now a very deep hole to mark the beginning of the last leg of the storm drain project.  Oh, the traffic.  We work around it all and life goes on.

Tomorrow we will drive north to the frame factory.  Lisa and her father have artwork to be framed for their joint exhibit (date to be determined).

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.

                  Peace,
                            Danny
