Progress

Hi,

Great weather gave us a perfect chance to have a weekend full of adventure.  There were three art events and fun in the mall.  Oh, our nights are warmer than the days in SoCal.  Hmm.

The 'Old School Friday' song was "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett.  Try this one on for 'Easy Monday':
"L.A. proved to much for the man, so he's leaving a life he's come to know, ooh.  He said he's going back to find, what's left of the world.  The world he left behind not so long ago.  He's leaving on that __ __ __ __, yeah, said he's going back (going back to find), to a simpler place and time..."  Hint:  It's a travel song.  Something to do with the bewitching hour in the previous song.  That's enough hints.

Bright and early Saturday morning I took Cat to school for a day of extra study.  Then at 10am we went to a lecture at ArtBridge by Hossein Farmani titled 'Connecting the World through Photography.  Among his many accomplishments as a promoter of photography, Hossein created the Lucie Awards, which is the equivalent of the Oscars for photographers.  His talk was informative and inspiring.  After his presentation we had lunch with him and the new US Counsel General to Chiang Mai, and his team.  They were very warm and gracious and made sure we knew that we could call on them to answer any questions that might come up, or help in any way.  We learned about some of the places they have been assigned in the past, and they shared experiences living in other cultures.  It was a stimulating morning to say the least.

In the afternoon the new van got a chance to experience a drive to the country.  We took Cat out to The Sold Project for their Christmas party.  It was our first trip on a smooth, two-lane country road and it performed great.  After a quick change and some dinner we went to 9 Art Gallery for the opening of a beautiful exhibit by a local artist.  He uses acrylic paint on canvas to create very airy portraits of life.  His early work was of Thai life in a semi-traditional manner, and his newer works center around women and children.  Here is a link to the 9 Art Gallery site:

On Sunday, Central Plaza was the location of our final art excursion.  We all went through the 180 photographs by Thai and American photographers and it was fun seeing photos of places we had seen in 'real life'.  It was nice having Cat with us to show her some of the US and have her explain a few things from Thailand we'd never seen.  Some of the work was in color and some black and white.  Seeing various sights through the 'eyes' of another can often show us things we missed.  We all learned something.  Lunch and a visit to Swensen's for ice-cream and sorbet were a perfect ending to a busy morning.

There were military exercises across the river involving the Thai version of the ROTC.  This is a program where high school kids learn a bit of military science and are then excluded from the draft.  Thailand still has a conscription law that required young men to be in a lottery.  If your number comes up, you go to the army for a period of time.  The country has never been in a modern 'war', but they have an extensive military.  Hmm.

Today's photo is our new Mango tree.  The rocks around the base are there to keep Daku and BamBam from eating the dirt.  It's dirt from the nursery and they find it irresistible.

Have a Great Week.

               Peace,
                         Danny
