Friendship

Hi,

Chiang Rai experienced more of the mixed weather thing this weekend. Warm and humid with occasional rain. Today it was the same. Saturday we went to 9 Art Gallery for an opening and Sunday we had a downtown adventure.

Our 'Old School Friday song was a stumper. It was "We Belong Together" by Robert & Johnny. Maybe you'll fare better with this 'Easy Monday' song: "The best things in life are free, but you can give them to the birds and bees, I need __ (That's what I want) That's what I want (That's what I want)..." Hint: The title is only one word, something that everyone needs at some point, and many people want. Hmm, it's easy.

Saturday was mostly a day around the house. In the afternoon we went over to Martin and Kay's to deliver all the parts for the catalog and invitation for Lisa's November exhibit in Bangkok. Martin is a very talented artist and graphic designer. We got to see their pet turtles in the daytime. We'd seen them the night of the party but they were asleep. They are beautiful creatures and they respond to certain commands.

In the evening we went to 9 Art Gallery for the opening of a show featuring eight artists. They each had three or four pieces and each artist had a different style. We missed the opening entertainment, a trio of musicians mixing traditional and contemporary styles. Khun Sompong told me about the man that led the group, who is also an artist. They had a CD for sale that included the leader's art work in a series of postcards. It was an incredible package of art and music.

Sunday evening we had dinner with Jaffee at the Night Bazaar. After dinner we walked over to Jet Yod Rd. to see a painting Jaffee told us about. The little shop was a combination laundromat/tea bar. There were three paintings by an apparently untrained Thai woman artist. Across the street we visited a new place. It's kind of a bar on a corner with the street sides open. There is lots of old stuff all around, plus hand-made leather bags, beaded jewelry, and reggae T-shirts. What really caught our eye was a wall literally glowing with art. A young man named David from Andorra was painting a mural in 'black light' paint. It was a psychedelic scene that really popped out. David and his girlfriend have been traveling around Southeast Asia for four months. When they got to Chiang Rai and found the bar, he asked if he could paint something and they let him have a wall.

There's a new trend happening here in customizing motorbikes. They're putting LED lights on the bodywork, so at night you see the shape of a frame or fairing coming down the street in electric blue with red accents. It's something to behold.

Have a Great Week.

Peace,
Danny
