Life

Hi,

The days are slowly returning to normal for us, but not for many others.  The aftershocks are coming at much wider intervals, but that tends to lull one into forgetting and when one hits, it's like 'deja vu all over again'.

This week's 'Easy Monday' song was "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash.  Time for some 'Zany Day' madness:
"Leroy, boy, is that you?  I thought your post-hangin' days were through.  Sunk-in eyes and full of sighs, tell no lies, you get wise.  I tell you now we're gonna pull you through, there's only one thing left that we can do.  __ __ __ __ __ __, it's like nothin' else to make you feel sure you're alive...."  Clue: Eventually, he'll see the light.  The boys are on a quest.

After several walks around the house and through the rooms, my layman's opinion is that there is nothing structurally wrong with our house.  We will be getting a more professional view tomorrow.  We have friends who are still living in tents, so life has not returned to normal for them.  As time passes, more is revealed about the extent of the damage in parts of town, especially areas close to the epicenter.

At this time, our understanding is that the road to Chiang Mai may be closed, which would put giant limitations on commerce and travel in general.  I think there may be an alternate route, but a much longer drive.  Wat Rong Khun had major damage from the quake and the magnificent mural on the temple wall was destroyed, along with spires and other artwork.  It is still unclear as to what will become of this iconic landmark.  Khun Chalermchai, the artist who created the 'White Temple' complex, spent 20 years creating his masterpiece and is now mourning it's loss.  Hopefully, some parts can remain open.

I am filled with gratitude when I think of all of our friends here in Thailand, as well as other parts of the world, who called or wrote to see if we were alright.  That's what friends do.  Many of our friends couldn't even think of going to sleep that first night.  Lisa would get brief text messages like 'can't sleep', or 'afraid to go to bed'.  We understood, since we were reluctant as well.  One of the eeriest things about some of the aftershocks is hearing them coming before feeling them.  Eventually, this whole thing will pass, but for now, it's still a drag.

Today's photo was taken this morning on the main road near our street.  The mystery of the activity by the bridge is finally solved.  There is a new bridge coming.  We're hoping they are building an addition to the existing bridge, so there could be two lanes in each direction.  At least we know what all the concrete and digging is about.

Many of you have asked about the dogs and how they are doing.  BamBam is back to chasing birds and barking at anything and nothing, along with hiding from thunder.  Daku has a new obsession with eating the dirt around the new trees.  So, the dogs are doing just fine, being dogs.

It feels like a Wacky Wednesday.

                    Peace,
                              Danny
