Friday Funnies

Hi,

Having a day without rain was nice.  Of course, it was hot and humid, but what else could it be?

This week's 'Zany Day' song was "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters.  That means it's time for 'Old School Friday'.
"Pull the string and I'll wink at you, __ __ __.  I'll do funny things if you want me to, __ __ __."  Hint:  The subject of the tune is a cousin to the character in the cartoon at the bottom of the page.  Easy oldie.

Yesterday was 'Labor Day' in most of Asia.  We found out last night at dinner.  That explains why Khun Mahn didn't come to the house to work on things, or answer his phone.  I seem to remember that when we were building the house this came up as a day off.  Since we didn't go out yesterday, we don't really know what it was like, but it is a National Holiday.

Every time I say 'going into town' it reminds me of old westerns when they would pile into the buckboard and hit the dusty trail.  We live on the North side of the Mae Kok river, which basically borders the main part of Chiang Rai.  There are a series of bridges that provide access to 'town'.  Our little bridge is on the West side and has a more rural feel.  The two bridges that feed into the central part of town offer a night and day contrast as far as the pace of life on either side of the river.  So, going into town is always an adventure.

Today we went into town twice.  Once for supplies, and back again for a 'carwash lunch'.  Since we're on this restricted eating thing until Monday, we can't have a lot of coffee.  Normally, we'd leave the van to be washed and then have coffee.  Today we decided to have lunch instead.  We knew that the wash would be done before our lunch was over, but there's never any pressure to pick it up.  It's always the same when we drop it off, 'One hour, you go eat.'  It rarely takes one hour, especially when there's only one car ahead of us.  The owner just knows to say that.

The shack by the river that had been blown down by the wind earlier in the week, was standing proud today.  Shiny new tin sheets glistened in the sun and it seemed to be finished.  I still don't know what they're working on in the river, but there are great piles of sand, a machine that pounds into the river, and a lot of concrete gets poured.  Maybe one of our 'contacts' can investigate and solve the mystery.

Today's photo is the little elephant statue at Khun Tawd's frame factory.  The figure is about 16 inches tall.  I think he'd look great in the garden.  Hmm.

Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.   Time for the 'Funnies'.

                  Peace,
                            Danny
