Friend

Hi,

Today was one of those days when the breeze was strong enough to keep the temps down, blow the clouds in and out, and bring different degrees of rainfall to various parts of town.

The 'Easy Monday' song was "Groovin'" by The Young Rascals.  'Zany Day' is next and this one fits perfectly:
"You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack, you may find yourself in another part of the world.  You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile.  You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife.  You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?  Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down..."  Clue: The title is in four words.  This is what happens when your head talks to you too much.  (555)

This morning it was my turn for a massage from Khun Joy.  I have found that if I don't focus on what she is doing, I don't notice the minor discomfort that I used to feel.  There were times when it was unavoidable.  There is definitely a more relaxed, floaty feeling after it's all over.

One of the things we learned before we arrived in Thailand was the fact that many Thais are shy about speaking English.  This often starts with teasing from peers in school.  Tatt and some of his friends apparently practice their English at school.  He told us they laugh at him for completing words.  Lisa has been working with him on speaking clearly and saying the whole word, but his friends think it's silly.  Actually, it sounds more Thai to not say the hard endings of some words.  All that is leading to a couple of encounters we had today with the speaking of English.

One of the pool guys was telling us about the work they've done and what to expect.  Today he used quite a few English words to explain himself.  I'd never heard him speak anything but Thai.  Later we met with Khun Natty's brother and he spoke a little English.  The first time we met him it seemed like he understood a few things, but he never spoke.  Today we had a little meeting with him about the artwork for T-shirts and he had no choice.  Even mixing the languages offers more possibilities for better communication.  Hmm.

Our friends Martin and Kay are renovating a building in the downtown area.  It's a four-story shophouse that will include a restaurant, craft shops, a gallery for local artists and a gallery for Martin's works.  From the fourth floor rear window he showed me an interesting sight.  He calls it 'Pigeon Hilton'.  A broken tile on the next building allows pigeons to have a shelter.  There is also grass and moss growing in the rain gutter, giving another example of the persistence of nature.

Tonight we begin a fast for our blood tests tomorrow.  We can't have anything to eat after 10pm tonight.  It's a good thing we made an early appointment.  After our tests we'll go to Work@Home and have one of their delicious breakfasts.

It's time for Wacky Wednesday.

                      Peace,
                                 Danny
