Hi,
More gorgeous weather here in Chiang Rai. Today we visited the talat (market), had dinner with a friend, and started preparing for Boot's time away.
'Old School Friday' is going to take you way back. Shout out if you know this one: "__ __, well it's time to go. __ __ well it's time to go. I hate to leave you but I really must say __ __, goodnight." Hint: The group is named after a breed of dog. The song was a hit in 1954, and was featured in a teen movie many years later. Hmm.
The late morning found us in the midst of the talat. The place was humming with activity. We were on a mission to get some shoes. I've grown fond of a pair of slip-on shoes that have seen better days. After much searching I found a comparable pair and struck a deal ($5.41). Lisa also found a beautiful pair of shoes, but only after we hit every shop we could find. There are stalls with clothes and shoes that can easily be missed if you don't take a turn in the maze that is the talat. We took a break to get Lisa's favorite treat, a coconut milk dessert that's cooked in little cup shapes. Hard to describe, but delicious. While we were waiting, everyone around the stove was reading my 'I am not a tourist shirt' and having a good laugh. It's become my ultimate 'ice-breaker/conversation starter'. It also helps get local prices.
This evening we went back to Leelavadee Restaurant for another dinner. This place is turning into our most used eating spot lately. We met our dear friend Sutheera there for a dinner that's been on hold since before we went to America. We had a great time, catching up on our respective lives, and discussing various topics of the day. Before we went into the restaurant Sutheera showed us a book she had to publish in order to get a promotion at the university where she teaches. The whole thing was in Thai, but it looked very impressive. She teaches marketing and that's been the focus of her Phd. studies in Bangkok. It's always a treat to be able to spend some time with such a busy woman.
Boot will be going to Rayong on Sunday and returning the following Sunday. She will spend the week with her family. There will be a ceremony at the family home signifying 100 days since her mother's death. It will also give Boot a chance to spend time with her sister and brother. Boot asked us today 'What you do when I'm gone?'. I guess we'll do what we did before. Eat out and wear dirty clothes until she returns. (5555) Seriously, we know how to take care of ourselves, in a pinch.
It's time for the 'Funnies'. Big thanks to my good friend Barry for this week's laughter.
Have a Wonderful WeekEnd.
Peace,
Danny
One day the old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.
The old German Shepherd thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder if there are any more around here?'
Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says the panther, 'That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!'
Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes, but the old German Shepherd sees him heading after the panther with great speed and figures that something must be up.
The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther.
The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!"
Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says...
'Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!"
